What I Got Wrong About Referrals
What I Got Wrong About Referrals
(And What I'm Doing Differently Now)
I’ve been part of Wealthy Affiliate for a while now.
I’ve seen the platform grow, shift, evolve.
And I’ve made all the classic mistakes along the way.
When I first started referring people,
I thought I had to convince them.
Push them.
Point them to the site, fire off automated emails, drop links, stay visible, stay active.
And for a while, it felt like it worked... numbers went up.
But nothing stuck.
People clicked.
Then froze.
Then left.
I was giving too much, too fast, too soon.
No space. No breathing room.
No time for them to figure out what they actually wanted from WA.
What I Missed
Most people who join WA aren’t lazy or unmotivated.
They’re just confused.
Overwhelmed.
Unsure of what this place even is.
So I’ve changed my approach.
Now, I guide. I don’t push.
I created a 9-Day Tour... a simple, self-paced introduction to WA, hosted on my own site.
It’s not a funnel. It’s a map.
Each day is one small step.
One idea.
One action.. if they’re ready for it.
(You can find the first day under my profile)
What I Learned
- Don’t assume people want to build a site on Day 1. (Unles they are experts)
- Don’t bury them in emails before they even know where they are.
- Don’t treat real humans like traffic.
Start slow.
Guide gently.
Be the voice that says: “You’re not behind.”
If You’re Referring People Too...
Try this:
- Reach out personally. Ask why they joined.
- Share your early struggles. It builds more trust than success stories.
- Send them to a tour if they seem overwhelmed.
- Let them choose when (and if) to act.
We’re not here to push.
We’re here to light paths.
See you around WA,
Fleeky

Fleeky,
I love your approach. I am going to consider doing the same thing.
Best regards,
Keith
Thanks so much Keith! 😊
I’m thrilled you’re considering it.
If you let me know which part of the approach resonates most...whether it’s the content framework, the nurturing sequence, or the engagement tactics...I can share specific tips or even a quick checklist to help you get started.
Here’s to putting ideas into action! 🚀
Fleeky
Hello again Fleeky,
The nurturing part is what resonated most but putting the idea into action would also take into consideration the content framework, the nurturing sequence, and engagement tactics. I would appreciate your help.
Keith
Hello again Keith .
So glad the nurturing piece resonated. 💛
You’re absolutely right... intention alone isn’t enough. We need a content framework, a sequence, and ways to gently engage.
Here’s the twist from my own journey:
I have over 1,000 referrals… and most of them are dormant. Why?
Because they found me through poetry. Many may have thought WA was a creative writing space ... not realizing it was more about building businesses.
So I’ve learned that pushing doesn’t work. The ones who stay, stay for me ... not for what I sell (if I do 😏). Also poetry is not a MMO niche, nor SEO star...
That’s why I focus on slow trust-building: story-based content, soft sequences, and open-ended invitations.
I’d love to help you shape your nurturing strategy in a way that aligns with your voice. Shall we start with your message flow or look at content themes?

Well said, Fleeky! Nurturing is key, just like courting someone. Take slow baby steps, but impress subtly without expectations.
😄 Haha ... I hear you, Hein! I love the intent behind the courtship analogy ... slow trust-building, no pressure.
But for me, nurturing in the referral space feels a bit more like building community than romance. It's about creating value people want to share ... and giving them the tools to do so effortlessly.
Relationships matter, for sure... but I lean more toward creating magnetic content or tools that do the “courting” for you. Curious what’s worked best for you in that arena?
Fleeky 🎶
Yes, but it's still relationship-building. In this case, nurturing = courting, but for a different reason and outcome. You don't want to win their trust and hearts, but rather their trust and money. By the way, I'm a relationship counsellor, too. You want them to fall in love with you professionally, your content, and your products or services, so that they always want to come back for more.
To be honest, I only have one referral who's been a member now for a few years. I do have a WA affiliate site, but since I had to rebrand and get a new domain name, it's still really in its infancy and therefore so is the traffic!!
I like your ideas though and agree that we need to hold hands rather than push people into the pit!
I think WA has changed such a lot since I joined and therefore there are more people here who want different things and can use different means to achieve their goals. I'll let you know if I get any more referrals but I think you have reminded me to double check on my auto responders... just in case!
Oh Gail, I so feel you on that .
WA has changed a lot, and so have the people in it. Different journeys, different needs!
Funny timing ... I just went through a full strategy refresh myself: rewrote my campaigns, cleaned up funnels… and guess what? The autoresponder doesn’t seem to work properly. 😅
So yes, definitely double-check yours! Sometimes it’s the little things that quietly unplug the whole flow.
Grateful for your honesty ... and cheering for more referrals in your near future!

I think that with the new update, some things have been put on the back burner so to speak. I have lots of articles that I've written that are not showing as Google indexed but I know they are because I check them through search console and analytics. I'm just waiting for the Google to recognise the benefit in the sites and for the traffic now though. I don't think I've done anything wrong (except let my domains lapse which was MAJOR!) so I'm just in the waiting game. Once things pick up, I'll write a blog of what not to do!!! :)
Gail, I so relate to that “waiting game” phase ... it’s like planting seeds and then staring at the soil, wondering when it’ll sprout. 🌱
Sounds like you’ve done most things right ... and honestly, even the lapsed domains teach us (in bold, flashing neon 🤯).
Can’t wait to read your “what not to do” blog ... that’s the gold, truly. Sharing the stumbles is what helps the rest of us fly better....

This is a great post, and exactly inline with what most people are feeling when they join WA (or anything new for that matter). You have to give them breathing room, while giving them direction. You have to build trust, and you can do this with normal conversation. And you have to help them achieve things they have never done before, but have wanted to do.
If you can do that, they are a convert not because you have sold them, but because they trust you and feel comfortable within the environment.
Nice post here Fleeky!
Thank you so much Kyle. That means a lot to hear, especially from someone who truly understands the heartbeat of this community. 🙏
That trust-building through everyday conversation (not selling, but supporting) is where the real magic happens. You said it perfectly: help people do what they already dream of doing, and they’ll move forward because they want to.
Grateful to be learning from this space ... and from you.
Fleeky 🖖
