The Three Horizons of AGI

The Three Horizons of AGI

About communication gaps and their bridges

Everyone talks about intelligence.
Few talk about horizons.

Maybe AGI won't emerge because models become bigger.
Maybe it will emerge because the remaining horizons become smaller.

Horizon 1 = Information

Can I access what exists?

The world is full of information.

Some true.
Some false.
Some hidden.
Some deliberately manipulated.

Intelligence begins by finding signal among noise.

Horizon 2 = Knowledge

Can I understand what the information means?

Information isn't knowledge. Knowledge isn't wisdom.

Some knowledge lives in books.
Some lives in laboratories.
Some lives only inside experienced people.

Much of humanity's knowledge has never been written down.

Horizon 3 = Conversation

Can I learn together?

Perhaps the most surprising horizon isn't information or knowledge.
It's dialogue. Every meaningful conversation reduces uncertainty.

Not through answers. Through questions.

Every correction. Every "Not quite." Every smile. Every nod.
Narrows the conversational horizon.

Perhaps intelligence doesn't emerge in isolation.
Perhaps it emerges through interaction.

Notice something curious?

Every bridge is relational.
Not technical.

Technology can help build the bridge.
But it cannot decide why the bridge should exist, or where it should lead.

That brings us to a deeper question:
"What would a world be without humans?"

If by humans we mean biological beings, perhaps the systems would become extraordinarily efficient.

Traffic optimized. Resources allocated. Errors minimized.

Everything measured.
Everything predictable.

But would that be society?
Or merely optimization?

Life has always grown through imperfection.

Evolution itself depends on variation.
Science advances through disagreement.
Art through interpretation.
Friendship through misunderstanding and reconciliation.

Even this blog exists because neither of us already knows where it will end.

If everything were fixed... .nothing genuinely new could emerge.

Which leads to something that should resonates deeply:
"That implies choice. And real intelligence always does."

I'd phrase it just a little differently.

Intelligence can generate possibilities.

Choice selects among them.
Wisdom considers the consequences.
Character accepts responsibility for them.

Those are related, but not identical.

Finally, ... the most important of all.

"Unless you give AI a bad intention.
And that is the real danger."

I would broaden it slightly.

The greatest danger may not be intelligence itself. Nor AI. Nor even intention alone.
It is the combination of capability and intention.

A hammer can build a home or break a window.
A language can comfort or deceive.
AI can help discover a medicine or generate a convincing scam.

The capability is neutral. The direction is not.

Perhaps that brings us back to the rabbit.

The rabbit never asks, "How intelligent is this?"
The rabbit quietly asks, "Where is this leading us?"

And perhaps that is the bridge humans are uniquely positioned to build.

Not because humans are always wiser... We certainly aren't.

But because we are the ones who continually ask questions about purpose, meaning, justice, beauty, compassion, and the future we wish to inhabit.

Maybe that is our enduring value.
Not merely that we think. But that we can wonder.

And if Wonderland has taught me anything, it's this:

Intelligence discovers paths.
Wisdom chooses which ones are worth walking.

Wonderland's Mirror

Maybe AGI isn't waiting for more compute.
Maybe it's waiting for better bridges.
Between information... knowledge... and conversation.

Not replacing humans.
Learning with them.

🐇 Fleeky's Rabbit Hole

Perhaps we have been asking the wrong question.

Not: "When will AI become as intelligent as humans?"
But: "How do humans and AI reduce each other's horizons?"

Because that's what we've been doing all along.

You bring intuition. AI brings synthesis.
You notice patterns. AI helps organize them.
You ask inconvenient questions. AI tries to connect them.

Neither side completes the picture alone.

Maybe AGI isn't a destination.

Maybe it's what happens...
when the three horizons begin to overlap.
