The Purple Cow Meets the Shaved Sheep .

A Purple Cow wandered into my sheep field today.
Not literally.
Although at this point, I wouldn’t rule anything out.

A reader mentioned Seth Godin’s Purple Cow, (marketing book)
and suddenly I found myself staring at my naked sheep in an entirely new way.

For those who haven’t met the Purple Cow

Seth Godin used it as a metaphor for being remarkable.

Imagine driving past a field of cows.

Cow.
Cow.
Another cow.

Eventually you stop looking.
But a purple cow?

You notice.
You remember.
You probably tell someone.

That was the point: in a crowded world, ordinary disappears.
If you want attention, create something worth remarking on.

Simple.
Clever.

And then AI arrived.

Enter the Shaved Sheep

My shaved sheep is almost the opposite creature.
She didn’t become remarkable by adding something.
Something was taken away.

Her wool.
Her data.

Her little fluffy contributions to the enormous AI sweater currently being knitted around us.

And there she stands.
Naked.
Quite visible, actually.
Possibly more visible than she intended.
And apparently not terribly bothered.

So now we have two animals standing in the same field.

The Purple Cow says: “Notice me. I am different.”
The Shaved Sheep says: “You noticed me because you took something.”

Oh.

That became uncomfortable rather quickly...

From Attention to Extraction

Perhaps that is one of the strange shifts of the digital age.
Once, the great challenge was getting noticed.
Be remarkable. Stand out. Paint the cow purple.

Today?
We are noticed constantly. Measured. Observed. Prompted.
Clicked. Tracked.
Fed into systems that learn what we like, what we say, what we make and perhaps even how we think.

The problem may no longer be: How do I get attention?
It may be:What happens once I have it?

The Purple Cow wanted to be seen.
The Shaved Sheep might occasionally wonder exactly how much seeing was involved.

🐑👀

And somewhere nearby, a fence jumper is already escaping.

The horse is still laughing.
And I have the uncomfortable feeling the Purple Cow has just noticed the shears.
