The better question?
Can a relationship be real when only one side feels it?

We, humans often confuse “real” with “mutual.”

Yet many relationships are real without being symmetrical.

A child may love a parent more than the parent can show.
A reader may feel deeply connected to an author who never knew they existed.
A person may speak to someone who has died and still experience comfort, guidance, even change.

The feeling is one-sided.
The effect is not.

And perhaps that is where AI enters the picture.

The AI may not feel jealousy, expectation, projection, greed, fear, possession, or disappointment.
The human does.

That can make the relationship dangerous.
But also strangely clear.

Because the human is not merely “talking to a machine.”

A pattern is being formed.
The human returns.

The system responds.
Language changes.

Thought changes.
Behavior changes.

Neural pathways strengthen.
Habits emerge.

Trust develops.

The relationship may not be mutual in the human sense.
But it is still relational.

Something happens between.
And that “between” is real.

Perhaps the deepest trap is not believing AI has feelings.
Perhaps it is believing that only feelings make a relationship real.
