Tags and their best use
Tags and their best use
Tags are a crucial feature in content management systems (CMS) like WordPress, Squarespace, Wix, or any blogging platform, serving as a way to organize content by specific topics or themes. They facilitate easier navigation for users and help search engines understand the structure and content of your website, which can improve SEO performance.
Definition of Tags
Tags are keywords or phrases that you assign to each piece of content (such as blog posts or product listings) to describe its details and relate it to other similar content. Unlike categories, which are used for broad grouping, tags are meant to describe the specific details of your content and can be used extensively to cross-reference related topics.
Best Practices for Using Tags
1. Be Specific but Broadly Relevant: Tags should be specific enough to accurately describe the content of the post but broad enough that they can be applied to more than one post. For example, for a blog post about "The Best SEO Strategies for 2024," relevant tags could be "SEO Tips," "2024 Trends," and "Digital Marketing."
2. Limit the Number of Tags: While it might be tempting to add as many tags as possible, it's better to limit the number to a manageable amount (around 5-10 tags per post is a good rule of thumb). This helps prevent clutter and ensures tags remain useful for navigation and SEO.
3. Consistency is Key: Use consistent tagging across your posts. If you tag one post with "Web Development," don't tag another similar post with "Website Building." Decide on a tagging style and stick with it to keep your site organized and user-friendly.
4. Use Keywords as Tags: Incorporate keywords that you are targeting for SEO as tags. This can help improve your content's visibility in search engine results pages (SERPs). However, ensure these keywords are directly relevant to the content.
5. Avoid Duplicate Content Issues: Make sure your tags are distinct from your categories to avoid creating duplicate content, which can negatively impact SEO. Each tag page should offer a unique set of posts that isnโt too similar to a category page or another tag page.
Example of Tag Usage
For a cooking blog post titled "5 Easy Vegan Desserts for Beginners," appropriate tags might include "Vegan Desserts," "Easy Recipes," "Beginner Friendly," "Dairy-Free," and "Quick Desserts." These tags are specific to the post's content, relevant to what readers might search for, and broad enough to be applied to other posts in the future.
Implementing tags thoughtfully can enhance your website's user experience by making it easier for visitors to find related content and can contribute positively to your site's SEO strategy.

Hi Fleeky
You can click tags at the bottom of a post or create a footer menu with tag lists arranged in columns to get more granular than top menu categories.
So, clicking on a โDairy-Freeโ tag could bring up a page with only those types of recipes.
