The Case of the Missing Four Cents And An Apology.
I lost four cents this week.
Please remain calm.
The financial markets are still functioning. My retirement plans remain largely unaffected.
No emergency meeting of the European Central Bank has been called.
Nevertheless, I noticed.
And apparently I was not the only person who had noticed small movements in the estimated earnings counter. Around the community, theories had begun doing what theories do particularly well when money is involved: reproducing.
So naturally, I put on my imaginary trench coat.
Then I read the small print.

And unfortunately for Detective Em Dash, the small print had a rather sensible explanation.
system works from a monthly community investment pool. Your points do not have a fixed cash value. Instead, your estimated earnings depend on your share of all the points generated during that month.
Their example makes it simple: if the monthly pool is $1,000, you earn 1,000 points, and everybody together generates 50,000 points, your share is 2% — or $20.
Which means the denominator matters. As the total number of points generated across the community changes, the estimated value of my own points can change too.
Suddenly my missing four cents had a perfectly respectable alibi.
That changed the mystery.
Perhaps the interesting question wasn't “Where did my four cents go?”
Perhaps it was “Why did four cents feel important enough for me to investigate?”
Yes, I know. Detective Em Dash may owe the denominator a small apology.
The mood inflator....

I returned later, liked another comment, and watched the counter.
Nothing.
Not a cent moved.
My case had collapsed.
The rabbit looked unsurprised.
Apparently, he had read the denominator. 🐰
