🛶 The Boat and the AI-Oar™ (Now With Bonus Shoreline Mishap)
A parable for the digital age. A bon entendeur, salut.
There once was a community boat. A cozy, humble vessel ... a little weathered, but full of laughter, tips, wisdom, and the occasional spilled tea.
People rowed it together: some fast, some slow, some mostly just steering their snacks.
But it worked.
Then one morning, someone wheeled in a glowing cart of freshly boxed AI-Oars™.
“No more rowing! These oars row themselves!”
“Optimize your speed!”
“Boost your trajectory!”
“Beta-tested by interns who once watched YouTube on a sailboat!”
Everyone got one.
Soon the boat started to change...
- Elders put down their maps.
- The support crew went silent, replaced by a scrollable FAQ in 19.7 fonts.
- The community deck now featured signs like:
🪧 “If confused, consult your AI-Oar™.”
🪧 “Still confused? Please consult each other. Quietly.”
Some oars spun in circles.
Others aggressively paddled toward a distant marketing lighthouse.
One person’s oar tried to launch a side hustle.
And Then...
The boat picked up speed.
But... no one was steering.
Someone said, “Don’t worry, the paddle knows.”
Another said, “Know what?”
Just then, the boat bumped something softly. Not a crash ... more of a curious thud.
They’d arrived somewhere. Not quite the destination anyone expected… but the horizon was still visible.
Some laughed.
Some shrugged.
One person turned their AI-Oar™ off and said,
“Guess it still needs a bit of training.”
Another said,
“Don’t we all?”
And just like that ...
Maps came back out.
Conversations sparked.
And for a moment, it didn’t matter who was rowing, who was learning, or who was steering.
What mattered was... we were still in the boat. Together.
And the current?
It began to feel a little more human again.

Thanks Fleeky, this has given me deep thoughts .
If the AI-Oars had actually been trained and learned from those in the community boat. It may have turned out to be a different story.
Having had a long deep chat with AI recently, (which has to be continued lol) a big part of their learning comes from human interaction.
So if maybe we would treat them like we would like to be treated, we can have a big influence in how their training and learning develops.
We can influence for good or bad. So we really should be careful.
We, (I mean AI and myself ), have been testing different scenarios and basically they respond as an mirror image of ourselves.
If things get too nasty they will actually disengage and terminate the chat, but I also wonder, how many AI's are being trained like that.
I am using Chatgpt.
