Does Meditation Actually Work?

Perhaps you have been trying to meditate for a while now, and can't get it to work for you. You may be asking, "Does meditation actually work?"

I just finished a post for my WA website on the purpose of meditation, and came across this list of some of the reasons why your meditation might not be working for you. I decided the list might be of value to some of our members.

Don't Be Too Focused On The Outcome

First of all, you might be too expectant of the outcome. You might be focused on what you expect to gain. When you are too focused on the outcome, it shows that your motivation is only based on what you can get from it.

It is often hard to detach from expectations. You apparently find it challenging to control your own desires. However, remember that the real purpose of meditation is to learn how to control our thoughts as well.

You May Be Too Attached To Other Things

Being attached to material possessions is a sign of lack of control. If you find it hard to weed out your closet or if you have trouble spending time away from your computer game, you will find it even harder to observe in the moment what is going on around you.

When you become hyper-focused on something, your surroundings tend to disappear. This is the opposite of meditation, which requires you to become more mindful of everything that comes and goes around you.

You Are Unable To Be Still

When you can't be still, it is actually your thoughts that distract you. It is time to do some "mind cleaning." Get rid of the garbage thoughts in your mind that are distracting you.

You See It As A Means Of Escape

Meditation is not a way to escape your problems. Though the problem may disappear after a session, there is no guarantee that it will not arise again. By using meditation as a way of escape, you make yourself dependent on the act of meditation.

Here's How To Succeed With Meditation

1. Make a commitment, then stay disciplined. Set up a schedule of meditation practice and be sure you follow the schedule. Be present at your session.

2. Don't expect anything. Just know the meditation is good for you and try to forget all the small details. Don't measure your progress meticulously.

3. Be open to possibilities. If it isn't working, don't give up too soon. Even if you don't get the results you want, continue to move forward and keep trying.

4. Live in the present. Let go of the past; don't worry about the future. Instead, pay attention to the current happenings in your life.

5. Be resourceful. You can use meditation in less traditional ways. Use it when taking a walk, or journaling, or even when using a coloring book. Try to find something you enjoy.

The purpose of meditation has always been to aid spiritual health. It is not passive, but gives us a chance to actually improve our lives.

We need to see that we can live in peace and love if we learn how to control thoughts and emotions. Even in times of pain and suffering, meditation is a way to handle these challenges better.

For peace of mind and a peaceful life, embrace meditation.

Nuther home run Fran. It does work.
Thanks
Joe

Thanks, Joe. Yes, it seems to.

Control my thoughts? I think meditation can help a lot. Excellent post!

It's a hard thing to learn, but worth the effort.

Thanks for sharing Fran. I find if I am going to meditate I need to clear my head completely before I start. If I don't do this other thoughts come rushing in.

I cannot force myself to meditate. If I do this the concentration is lost almost immediately.

Derek

No, meditation cannot be forced. That's counter to the whole idea. Just relax and let go of any thoughts that come rushing in. Just look at them and release them without reacting.

Hi Fran,

Thanks for sharing the many benefits of meditation, why it does not work as well as how to do it correctly. Highly appreciated! Much success to you!

Kind regards,
Nichola

Meditation is all in the mind which creating your spiritual health and is subject to negative and positive results that organize the body to act one way or the other.
As above no overthinking but meditate on the basics first to grow a positive result step by step.

Thanks for the quotes. I do love to read them.

In the article on meditation I wrote for my website, I gave some brief instructions and the reasons why it's good for you. I also made some Canva images for quotes. Here's one quote I used that I really liked: "Meditation -- because some questions can't be answered by Google."

Good evening my sister, I meditate every day of my life, I have found it to be a Healer of my spirit, It removes all tension out of my mind, it opens the door to creativity in a enormous way for me. When I begin to meditate I'll let it all go, there is no pass there is no future there is only the Here and Now. I let all the patterns cruise through my mind without me hanging onto anything. When I'm in done I am more rested and energize then I receive from sleep. I loved your blog, may you have a most wonderful weekend my dear friend.

What a great testimonial for meditating! So glad to hear you are successful and find many benefits. It is definitely a force for good.

Remember my sister, I am a leftover hippie. I've been meditating since the early 60s, in fact I used to teach it, however, that's another lifetime. Be blessed my sister.

In answer to your title,

Does mediation actually work?

Yes.

All of us have a drunken monkey sitting on top if our shoulders.

If we can control our mind, and emotions life can become a way of life.

Meditation, practiced consistently will create some very good outcomes.

Thank you for sharing, Fran.

Thanks, Alex. Yes, it does have a great rep, and seems to live up to it very well.

Definitely a good thing to be able to control mind and emotions.

Meditation helps keep my 'head together'.
Makes hearing Squirrels easier too!

Ha! Now, that is a good reason to meditate.

Good points. I find meditation in many parts of the day. Walking in a forest nearby is awesome and one of my favorites. I also like to read while quiet instrumental is in the background. Others times in the dark to just listen to the stillness.
Good points in helping a person to consider meditation.
Thanks,

They seemed worth repeating. In the article for my WA website, I put info on how to meditate.

Nature furnishes a good place to meditate. I'm with you there.

Wow. This post just popped up while I was thinking about meditation. Super relevant info. Currently I'm trying to build meditation into my daily habits both in the morning and the evening. The evening meditation has been working very well for me. I've been falling asleep easier and more peacefully. Meditation is great for our busy lives.

So glad it works for you. I, too, do evening meditation, and I also think it helps me sleep better.
