I am so glad that you decided to come here. Wealthy Affiliate is an amazing place. I know I had a problem with this when I started on the path to building my website. What in the world was going to be my NICHE?

Let us refresh on what a niche is. A niche is an audience that is out there on the web searching for a specific set of items within a subject. I will give an example.

The subject would be gardening. But you don’t look for gardening specifically, do you?

You want tips on growing that bonsai that your friend bought you for your new desk. Or maybe how to prune that overgrown rosebush out front.

For the information they are looking for, many will go to a site that says something about bonsai care or pruning roses. These sites are “niche sites”. They have picked a plant that takes special care and made a site based around it.

A site based just on roses might be a little too small though. Maybe the site that the homeowner with the overgrown rose bush was directed to a site about flowers that need particular care.

If you pick the right range for your niche, then you will have endless content to write about without being too big that you lose people!

Picking your niche….

It seems like a lot to think about. The truth is….it is a lot easier than you think. Start by thinking about you interests.

  • What books do I read?
  • What music do I listen to?
  • When I go to buy something random, what draws me?
  • Do I like reading?
  • Do I like writing?
  • Do I like the arts? Any of them?
  • How about working with my hands?

There are 3.5 BILLION people out there on the internet. So many of them are on the internet at any one time looking for the exact same things you are interested in.

Make a cooking page about how you do trying new recipes you find on the web. Try to fix a car then document it. Make a page covering the fixing of the car and your success.

The possibilities are only limited by how you let them limit you.

My niche is a little obscure still…….

I am doing a website about growing marijuana. Take a deep breath. Go look at my site and read what is there before you think I am doing something wrong. One of the first things I do is remind people to follow their local laws and do not break them.

Now, my niche is just starting to emerge as any form of market at any scale. This means that no matter how I rank, it will be a while before I can compete with a rose site or a bonsai site. I have the exact same things to talk about and the same quality of content though.

That is more ok than you think. Your niche has not gotten big enough for large scale competitors to take over the internet market. Run with it.

Your niche…..

Can be about whatever you want. It does not matter what you are doing your website on. There is an audience somewhere. The problem is learning about how to get it. There are a few things you need no matter what niche you choose to make your website about.

  • Make a set of goals – A set of monthly goals, weekly goals, daily goals, and daily tasks. Give yourself a set schedule to work by. This is a business after all.
  • Content – You can have the best site in the world but unless you can say you are providing your readers needed, then you have done nothing. They have no reason to come back. Take your time to make quality content.
  • Social media – There are several ways to monopolize the use of social media for your website. This can range from paid ads on Facebook, to posting funny pins to Pinterest. Take your time to learn how to do it right. These sites can be some of your best leads.
  • Get an Email subscriber and a PAID autoresponder – The email subscriber can be free all day long. It is just to get the emails so that you can keep in contact with people. The important part of this key is the autoresponder. Spammers use free autoresponders so if you do, then you are likely to find yourself in the spam folder. Just invest the $20 a month to get a good and reliable autoresponder. The spam folder will thank you.

I know…. Now you are here…

What in the world do I write?

That depends on your niche. I write about several things. Take a minute and think about a few things.

  • What problems do you have in your niche? – You don’t have to be an expert. Your job is now to find the answer that helps the most and makes the most sense to the most people.
  • What things do people buy in your niche? – Tell them about how it would fix a problem in their lives.
  • Better yet do a review on the product – now you have helped them fix something in their lives and made money off of the affiliate commission link from your review page.

How do you get it to work though? Great content. That is the secret to everything. It all comes back to your writing.

  • State the problem
  • Give the solution
  • Inform of benefit
  • Call to action

These are the four ingredients to great posts. Don’t forget them. They work no matter what you are writing about and no matter what you are trying to get people to do. Even if it is just to leave a comment.

Conclusion

Your niche is just that, YOURS. Yes, there are other people in your niche. Drop that excuse. There will always be competition.

There is only one of you though. You see things in your own way and understand them differently than the next guy. Now, find some keywords to express your opinion and get to writing!

How is your niche choice doing, B?

Anything new to tell, Britt?

I read this a while ago, "liked" it but forgot to leave a comment!

The questions, "What niche should I choose?" may be one of the most asked questions on this platform. I like how you stated some questions that people can ask themselves, Brittaney.

This was definitely an area that had me stuck for a few weeks, which is really interesting, considering that I have different interests and talents. My "aha moment" came just out of the blue when I realized that there was something I was already engaged in that I can easily use.

It's great when it jumps out at you like that. Mine didn't take weeks, but it did take a few days. I wasn't sure which hobby I should turn into a real business. Then I realized that one of my hobbies was just starting to become a market in the US so I jumped on it.

It is very informative on niche research and determination. Thank for sharing your knowledge and experience.

Thanks so much for sharing, Britt.
Yes, finding your niche can somehow seem so 'daunting' but have no fear there is light at the end of the tunnel. It can be confusing, but the points you have highlighted should help anyone hone in on their niche.

You are welcome Michelle. I am hoping to help new members get ideas for what they might want to do as their niche. That first one can be so hard to pick.

So true!

I enjoyed reading this post Brittaney. Every time I read something else on niches, I I always learn something more. Thank you for sharing this. ~Mark

Thank you Mark. I am glad to have helped you learn something. I know picking my first niche was a challenge for me. Now I have a bunch of niche ideas.

Many people struggle with determining what their niche is going to be. This post will help them narrow their focus so they can see things more clearly. Great post, Brittaney.

All the best
Sue

I did. So, I figured I would do something that would help people out. That is probably the hardest step to getting started and can stump people for a long time. I wanted to help people get started as fast as possible.

Great job!

This is a wondeful guide for people looking for a niche.
It can be a block to them starting an online business. This post gives great ideas and ways to find a niche.

I just cannot see having stuck around and been trying to find topics about something I have only a marginal interest in. Not for a whole month. Now, writing about something I love! that is a different story. I could do that all day long.

Very well written and explained. You have a natural talent, and you are absolutely right, with your comment about competition. There is so much information on the super highway, its limitless. The shape of the future will be far from what we envisioned when we were younger. Excellent work.

I just want people to know that it is ok to step out of comfort zones and find themselves here. It took us all time to find something that speaks to us. And if it speaks to us, then it speaks to other people.
