Writing Begins With 1 Word
Did you ever want to write for an audience?
Years ago during the time that I was in school writing was a task that frankly scared me and I tried to avoid it at all costs. This fear followed me for many years throughout my academic years and into adulthood. Today, I still question myself after I read something that I typed. Granted ABC and spell check make the writing process much easier for the everyday person but when I look back on a post often I find myself searching for the author of a particular piece to realize the author was me. Writing has served a multi-purpose in my life and in this post this purpose will be better defined for you.
What does writing do for a person?
Naturally writing can be an academic skill for many students and is used for examinations, course assignments, portfolio writing, creative writing, and so many others purposed to show success through the use of words. In this way it can prove to be a statement of academic intelligence. In reality, writing is an expression of thoughts that induce a feeling onto paper. There are all types of purposes for a person to write. My purpose right now is to validate the exercise of writing without having to be an expert in the writing process. Like I said earlier, I avoided writing at all costs for a number of reasons.
First, I never thought I could write eloquently so I didn't even try to put pen to paper, and that was the tool for writing. Alongside of writing eloquently there was the idea of grammar, this was an area that needed much improvement for me. Spelling was always something I did well so if there were typos they were more from general errors not the lack of a skill. As a young person, I didn't feel like I could write well, in fact I didn't think I could do anything well so I didn't try. I did know that in academics I always did really well with research projects and reports over a written test of any kind. The most difficult part was in getting started then everything seemed to just flow. There were some things like transition words, introducing an idea, and the final bow on the package the conclusion that I continually worked on but in time once I understood the mechanics of a good writing piece it seems to be a work in progress for me.
Secondly, validating my ideas on paper or anywhere was a very scary place for me. When you write something down the thought becomes a reality and honestly I wasn't looking for reality in my life until much later on. The first time in my life that I sought to validate my thoughts was when I was completing the task of a moral inventory. This exercise was for the process of healing emotional pain in my life and it was very revealing to me once it was completed. Now mind you it wasn't like a report for high school it was a gut wrenching process that took me about a year to complete. Once completed I felt like so many layers of junk were stripped away from me. Validation was a healing process and when it was done I could put it on a shelf and let it all go. It was done and it was complete, probably the first thing I ever completed in my life. After this exercise was done I avoided writing again because I wasn't really sure what else I could do with it at that time.
The day came when emotions were high and output was low so I began to write with technology, which was so much easier for me. Processing from mind to pen/paper was often overwhelming for me so when computers became an everyday household item so did writing for me. Now at this time in my life the need for writing became a healing strategy that was used for myself but most important to others that take the time to read my words and identify with the healing within the medium I write in. The final reason that I write today is to continue to heal and to help others heal too. Life is too short to spend it suffering so I like to share my words to show kindness and hope to those that take the time to read what I write.
Can anyone be a writer?
If you have a thought you have something to write about. I never imagined myself writing a post about writing but here I am and I love what I do each day in the form of content. Are there areas I want to improve? Do I want to do something bigger than a blog for my site or posts on Facebook? What are the possibilities as a writer? There are so many avenues that can be taken in the area of writing and any road has a starting point. The starting point begins with the first word you write and it could be your name as that starting point. All it takes if for you to believe you can and to put the first word down and just keep writing day after day or minute after minutes. There is not a right way to start just a word that all it takes.
Now my big dream in the next five years is to write a book, most likely a memoir of some kind and to have it published. I have written an ebook on grief (very short read) and a writing journal for grief is in the works to be published. But they were just short pieces with a small amount of story for one setting. My next book will be more of who I am now and the content will be on healing through inner truth. Everything I do today is a work in progress but today, my choice is to move forward with a smile and an idea that will become bigger than, life expected.
Is it good to be schooled when it comes to writing?
Personally, life has been my school, whether it was a classroom of mine or one that I was teaching as a special educator, journal writing, post writing, or any other creative way to express thought. Life long learning is great for anyone and there are many avenues that can be taken in this area. A college course of creative writing is an awesome starter for building skills. There are numerous of other writing workshops and platforms that can benefit someone that has an interest in writing for fun or career. Below is a link to a writing course with Brian Tracy, a renowned author and public speaker.

It is always the FIRST word.
For someone who never thought that they could write eloquently you have really written a very good article.
Now, on to the book you want to write-it is in the cards for you. I wish you great success in all you do!!
Thank you so much. I actually have started a memoir but I am waiting till my life is settled after my house closes to keep going on it. I appreciate your kind words and thanks for reading my blog.
Yes, anyone CAN be a writer, Evamarie! Look at me! Just write what you feel, look it over, make some corrections and put your work out there.
I guarantee that many will like it and many others will not, but it is out there, and you are finished with it, and on to your next work! Later on, you can always go back and edit if you decide that it needs to be done!
An excellent post, my friend! God Bless!
Jeff
