Google Is Driving Me Crazy!

I just can't understand Google. I've been trying hard to improve the speed of my site with little success. It was terrible the last few days. I'd never seen red numbers until now.

So much has been said and written on the subject. I've read tons of information about it and get more confused each time. Do this, don't do this... It's a trial and error thing.

It seems we shouldn't overlook it since it's a critical ranking factor, much more the mobile site speed if we consider over 50% of people surf the web on their phones.

PageSpeed Insights vs Think with Google

Google has two tools we can use to measure the speed of our sites: PageSpeed Insights (PSI) and Think with Google (TWG). The first one analyzes the speed of our desktop and mobile sites, while the second one focuses on the mobile version.

On PSI I always averaged 50-79 on mobile (which is average per Google's standards) and 97-99 on desktop. So, in general, you could say it's acceptable. However, when using TWG I've always gotten bad results. It always says my speed is slow. Google says load time should be no more than 2.5 seconds. I've seen speeds as high as 5.5 seconds! That's insane!

If you search authority sites like Amazon and YouTube, per Google's standards they have a lot of room for improvement on PSI. You would think they were perfect, right? However, if you check them with TWG, they perform fine. With me it's the other way around.

Are Plugins the Devil?

I know we're supposed to have 5 plugins max, although I think that's impractical if not impossible.

A couple of days ago, I created a TOC for one of my posts. I'd never used one before, but I wanted to give it a try. Most of the ways to do that involved plugins though. Since I didn't want to add more plugins, I had to research until I found how to do it through coding. It took me some time to do it but I was successful.

I wanted to add a hide/toggle button but didn't find how to do that manually, so I used a plugin. This totally defeated the purpose. Little did I know the problems that would arise later.

I don't want to have a plain site. That's why I'm constantly thinking of ways to make it better. The problem is most of the recommendations I come across involve a plugin. If I want to do this, I have to download a plugin. If I want to do that, I have to download another plugin. It's a never-ending story. I wouldn't have to face that if I knew coding.

Tweaking, Tweaking, and More Tweaking

I'm not a techie. Never been. I'm starting to realize we do need to have some knowledge about it. Every time I run a test I get a list of recommendations that I don't understand. It's as if everything were written in another language.

Well, I do understand a few things in layman's terms, but the problem is I don't know how to fix it. They mention next generation images, DOM size, static assets, render-blocking resources, and I don't know what else. What is all of that? :/

Through trial and error, I found a couple of plugins were slowing down my site. One of them was a hide/collapse toggle maker and the other one was a lazy loader. I was able to see a big difference after getting rid of them.

I'd also installed a plugin that was supposed to increase the performance of my site. I forgot the name, but I freaked out when I thought it had messed my site up. I uninstalled it and everything went back to normal.

Now I'm getting scores of 70-80 on PSI mobile and around 90 on desktop. However, the situation didn't change much on TWG. I just decreased my speed by one second. :'(

Bottom Line

I don't know what to do now. I even deleted the ads I was running on my sidebar but that didn't help.

Some people say we shouldn't pay attention to those numbers from Google, while others say the opposite. Who's right and who's wrong?

What's your take on all this? I'd like to know.

Enrique

Good Morning Enrique,

I forgot to mention one thing. As my website is getting full and I use quite a few pictures for each post I was told to install plugin Lazy Load. It only shows content when it is required by your visitor, it seems to help.
I was also told that my sidebar was too full of widgets so I reduced them and made a Recommendations page.

Have a good weekend, Taetske

Hi, Taetske,

I did use that plugin you mention but it causing more harm than good, so I uninstalled it.

I had a couple of banners on my sidebar and got rid of them. I'd like to have some to be honest.

I'll have to keep looking. Thanks!

Good afternoon Enrique,

There you see not all website are the same so the way how plugins function also seem to differ.
Do have a look at how I made my Recommendations page you might like the idea.

All the best, Taetske

Hi Enrique, great post. Google has always been hard for me to understand and they continue to be.

The 5 plugin thing I found impossible, and in my site health stats rate at 50 % for plugins where everything else is at 100%

Trial and error is something I always practice. I de-activated my TOC, but according to Rank Math it is recommended. When I ask site support about about my speeds, they say they are good, but google tends to differ.

Best wishes,
Michael

Hi, Michael,

I think only Google itself knows how it works. When you look it up online, there is a myriad of opinions about it.

I definitely agree with you regarding plugins. I think having only 5 is too restrictive. Just like you, I'd been at 50%. After deleting a couple of them, I'm at 70%.

Thanks for pitching in.

We do need to work on our site speed, making it as fast as possible. However, I'm with you -- it isn't always easy to figure out how to improve things. Trial and error, I suppose.

I do know that it is a good idea to test each of your plugins to see if any are the problem: remove, recheck speed; put back in if it was not the problem.

Good luck! I need to check my overall speed with Google, too, as I haven't done that lately. Afraid of what I'll find out...lol...

Hi, Fran,

Most definitely! Speed is a critical ranking factor and as such, we can't overlook it.

I do avoid adding plugins for everything. If there's another way, I'd rather try that. The problem is that it involves coding and other technical stuff I'm not familiar with.

Good luck with your test! Hope everything is fine. Fingers crossed!

I'm not up to speed on the new tech stuff. I check my speed and it shows slow or fast, doesn't make sense to me. When I use different devices, phone or tablet, i don't see any lag on my site loading. For me, if it works, its good enough. When my site gets larger speed might become an issue, but for now, I'm happy with where I am.

Greg

I don't really get it either.

Hi, Greg,

It's important to distinguish between desktop and mobile. When testing the speed for both, you will always get higher scores on desktop since we use Internet networks that use cable or optical fiber, which are fast.

However, phone networks are slower. Currently, 4G is the most commonly used, even though some people still use 3G. Evidently, we will get even lower scores with 3G. We will have to wait and see what happens with 5G.

The problem is many people use their phones now to surf the web instead of computers. Statistics suggest this applies to 50% or more of web users. Since we want to reach those people who use their phones, we have to keep our sites as fast as possible. Otherwise, they'll leave.

Got it.

Google can be contrary and wrong too Enrique.
Every so often I get a message to say a site/post or whatever has problems. Now I click fixed before doing anything else or wasting hours. Nine times out of ten I get a message to say they agree I have fixed it. Which means there was no problem in the first place.
I check speed etc under each individual site I have in site manager, under Details. Its good to click 'empty cache' too.

I too have added plug ins that were disastrous. I check numbers before and after adding a new one.

Hi, Linda,

While looking this up, I came across some sites where they say we shouldn't pay attention to Google.

The fact is most of the traffic we get will probably come from Google, so we have to abide by its rules. The problem is those rules are confusing.

I avoid plugins whenever possible, but sometimes there's no other option.

Thanks!

Google is very important to our business, after all its the main search engine. It's just that messages from google console aren't always true.
Well google console probably has a blip then sends out the messages to loads of site owners saying they have a problem.
When it comes down to it you follow advice or suggestions that feel right for you.

Getting more confused every passing day lol. I'll have to keep looking. Thanks!
