When the Weekly Challenge Turns Into Something Bigger

I wanted to share something that started as simply taking part in the Weekly Challenge and ended up turning into something I can consistently use going forward (if it works).

This week’s challenge as you all know was to create a magazine cover.

Nothing too complicated about that....

The Thought That Changed It

While I was putting it together, I had a bit of a random thought:

“What if I used something like this as a social media post… maybe even a weekly thing?”

Which, to be fair, is not something I usually come up with an hour after getting out of bed… I normally take a bit longer to get going 😄

It was just one of those things that sort of appears out of nowhere and then keeps growing the more you think about it.

From One Image to a System

That single idea quickly turned into something more structured.

Instead of just creating one cover, I started thinking about:

  • A weekly “magazine-style” recap
  • Using my own article titles
  • Turning it into a short video rather than a regular post

At that point, it stopped being a challenge entry and started feeling like something I could actually build around.

Making It Repeatable

Once I decided I liked the concept, I focused on making it reusable.

I:

  • Tested a few different cover styles
  • Picked the one that felt right
  • Moved into Canva and broke the design down into layers. I hadn't used its Magic Layers feature yet. Very useful it turns out.
  • Made it into a template
  • Created a sample interior page
  • Created an end card to try encourage follows

The goal wasn’t perfection — it was creating something I could use again without starting from scratch.

Turning It Into a Reel

From there, I put together a short video version using CapCut.

I had to make a few adjustments along the way:

  • The magazine flip feature I wanted was paid (enter the sticky note transition)
  • I tweaked the layout so I could crop the video to remove the watermark (not ready to part with any more $$$ than I have to).
  • Kept things simple rather than overcomplicating it

It wasn’t a polished production — I just a working version of the idea.

The Result

I ended up with something I’m pretty happy with, like any first try there is always room for improvement.

Happy to hear any constructive criticism.

The plan now is to use this as a weekly Friday recap-style post.

Why This Actually Matters

The biggest takeaway for me wasn’t the design itself.

It was how quickly something small turned into something usable.

Recently I finally started leaning more into Facebook Reels, (and distributing them onto the other platforms), and there’s no doubt they get better reach than static image or text posts.

Up until now, everything I’ve posted has been my own travel footage.

This gives me:

  • Another type of content
  • A repeatable format
  • A way to reuse content I’ve already created

The Bigger Realisation

This whole thing reminded me of something simple:

Ideas don’t always come from planning.

Sometimes they come from doing.

If I hadn’t taken part in the challenge, this idea probably wouldn’t have happened.

Curious if anyone else has had something similar happen — where a small idea turned into something bigger?
