Major social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram gather user data which they then use to generate user analytics. Marketers are even able to specify their desired consumer profile by providing a set of criteria to the gathered data to even further narrow down the results when generating market analytics. Sound confusing? Well, that's because it is. Modern Market research is intricate and complex but don't get scared by this and realizing that even somebody with a basic understanding of market research can still use the valuable data gathered on social media.

Technology has made the complexity of market research greater than ever before. However, it has also provided user-friendly solutions. These solutions come in the form of Google AdWords and Facebook Analytics among many other reliable options to marketers. A more accurate description of these solutions would be that they're a suite of online programs that gather, generate and break down user data. They make it all easier mainly.

All marketers need to do is setup these tools to gather the information they need, then the programs do the rest. For instance, if a company was trying to advertise their new iOS mobile game to boy's ranging from ages 12-25 on Twitter. All that the marketing team would need to do is specify that set of criteria and then once enough user data is collected the programs will generate market analytics for boys ranging from ages 12-25.

After the data has been gathered and the analytics generated marketers now have the information they need to proceed in developing the most successful strategy they can. Such vital information is crucial to social media marketing's success because it can be one of the most difficult predict.

Social media provides the world with 24/7 nonstop digital content. Statistics show that teenagers and young adults spend on average 7 to 9 hours a day on social media. Seems advantageous to a marketer right? Not entirely, additionally statistics show that a user who takes the time to click on a link on average only spend about 15 seconds or less on the landing page. So what's that telling us? What is the one thing the is so readily available yet so hard to get? Not only to get but to keep? Attention.

Getting the attention of people on social media is tough and only become more difficult as the target demographic gets younger. Teenagers and young adults in their early to mid-twenties have developed extremely short attention spans when it comes to social media. They digest so much of it that it's almost devalued. A similar way to think about the concept is with currency value. If a country experiences extended periods of inflation the value of their currency will decrease, with economic inflation, it means there is too much money getting printed, so each bill is worth less in value. This phenomenon applies to modern social media marketing as well because there are so many posts every day on numerous different platforms that the value of each post is nearly worthless unless it can get traction with its target market.

So how do you get this elusive and precious commodity? Nobody is sure honestly. Answering why something goes viral is nearly impossible because it can be for an infinite number of reasons. The best anybody can do to try and reach their desired consumers on social media is create the best-educated guesses they can from the data and analytics they've compiled and hope for the best. Marketers still employ traditional marketing practices to aid in this effort such as, celebrity endorsements, demographic specific offerings, and consumer surveys but there's always a limit to how successful they'll be simply because of the factors they can't quantify.

Young consumers are unpredictable, one day the like hip-hop and rap the next like country music. External contributing factors in their lives such as peer pressure or the desire to fit in can greatly influence the decisions they make, and there's just not a way to predict what those may be.

So there you have it, your crash course in social media marketing has reached its end. With the style of marketing, it's almost as if there are no right answers so, the best thing you can do is stay current with whats going in the world of social media. Stay informed and flexible to the unpredictability of the landscape so you're ready to adapt when necessary in order to reach your goals.
