So you're probably looking into an email marketing platform to build your list. I've had many through out the years, since 2006.
I can tell you that there has been a lot of advancement in the technical part of email platforms. The area you'll want to focus in choosing the right platform for you will be if the interface is friendly enough that you will feel comfortable using it and also will it serve your main reason for having an email marketing platform.
One thing that you need to remember is that email marketing works best when you follow up with your list by proving valuable content and being very consistent to stay in contact with your leads.
So here's my take on it.

Look for the platform that best suits your needs and you feel confident with their interface.
This is what I learned:
- Aweber for me was not user friendly and they became very strict where my email open rates dropped because my emails where being tagged as spam by the receiving end.
- MailChimp was a nightmare for me because it's not friendly at all. Too many clicks and weird places to find what I needed. I did both the free and paid versions.
- GetResponse has been the platform of my choice. it's very friendly to use, things don't seem cluttered and what I like is that they have evolved to include landing pages creation and also funnels. Plus the price is right.
If you don't see other famous names in my list above is because I've learned to keep things simple and 3 options are better for making a choice. Just remember that you'll need to test it out for yourself and not just go by what anyone recommends.
I hope this helps.
Happy Emailing!
