No, don’t do it…please, come to me!
The sun dipped below the horizon as I finished my refreshing shower. The warmth of the water lingered on my skin, and I decided to step onto the balcony to let the evening breeze dry me off. As I reached for my towel, a sudden realization struck me—I had forgotten to bring a change of clothes with me.
Leaving the towel hanging on the laundry line, I rushed inside to grab some fresh clothes. The screen gate clanged shut behind me as I locked it securely. My daughter wasn't feeling well, so I wanted to make sure she stayed safe while I quickly changed.
My heart thumped in my chest as I searched through the rooms for her. The apartment felt unusually quiet, and a sense of unease settled over me. Finally, I found her hidden behind her mom's wardrobe, a look of fear etched across her face.
Concerned, I approached her, kneeling down to her eye level. "Sweetheart, what's wrong? Are you okay?" I asked gently.
"He wants to kill me!" she whimpered, her eyes wide with terror. Before I could comprehend her words, she abruptly stood up and headed straight for the open lounge window.
"No baby, don't do it! Please, don't jump!" I screamed, my voice filled with panic. My daughter's response echoed back, "He wants to kill me!" as she extended her left foot out of the window.
I reacted on instinct, rushing forward and grabbing her pull-over hood with desperate strength. "Heeelp!" I screamed as I pulled her back from the dangerous precipice. The situation was more dire than I could fathom.
Just as I struggled to keep her safe, two men suddenly appeared in the kitchen, having jumped into the apartment through the window. Relief washed over me as they joined in the effort to pull my daughter back to safety.
Together, we managed to rescue her and settled her on the couch. As the initial shock began to fade, the men explained that they had heard my cries for help from outside and rushed in to assist.
I held my daughter close, still trembling from the close call. Gratitude filled my heart for the unexpected heroes who intervened just in time. The evening took an unexpected turn, but the love and support surrounding us proved stronger than the fear that had briefly gripped our lives.

That was April 2013, when my family lived on the second floor in an apartment block! Today she is a Trainee Manager in Pick'n Pay chain stores. She completed her B.Com degree and went on to attain an honors degree with only 2 marks short of a cum laude. She has really made us proud.
I am aware of the timing involved, Ernest.
Be blessed always.
Maxine :)
