Quick tip for Adding ads to post

When adding Google Responsive ads to my posts and page I often had formatting issues with Wordpress stripping out line spacings so the ad looked squashed. Also, when later editing the post all I saw was a big white space where the ad was positioned which I sometimes typed into, or deleted, messing with the javascript so the ad didn't show. I found a work-around.

Now I add a line code <hr /> above and below the google adsense code when inserting it via the text editor. This helps in three ways:

  • It delineates the space where the ad code resides so I can see it when visually editing and don't mess with it.
  • It inserts a nice discreet line above and below the google ad when the page is visited, highlighting it with additional white space.
  • It shows me if the spacing is out so that the ad would float over a neighbouring image when inserted.

My ads are now nicely centred between two blocks of text and surrounded by an even white space, which means they are just begging to be clicked on.

Google adsense just told me I've had 10,000 ad page impressions which sounds good (though onlly equates to around £10 earnings!)

Hope this tip helps someone else!

I've run Adsense for around 12 years now. My fear would be separating with a horizontal line will cause the earnings to drop. Sometimes when the ads are clearly "boxed off" the earnings can drop. However, as with all these things, experimentation is key. Surrounding with a

might achieve the same thing for you without adding the line.

The lines are only black in the dashboard view, and are just faint hairline's on the actual page. I will experiment with your DIV idea, too. Thanks!

Well, I'm certainly tagging it, as I'll probably stumble across the problem one day.....

Thanks for sharing. Have you ever had money deducted? Today i checked my adsense account and they deducted 10ct because of 'invalid traffic-adsense content'. I have never clicked on my own ads on my website. I wander what that is?

Don't think that has happened yet. I sometimes wonder whether page loads count when I'm using gtmetrix to assess my page speed as I do get viewing spikes around then. Guess you could ask google?

You are right. I will, as i am pretty new to all this.Thanks.

It's normal. I've often found that happened to mine over the years. This is why your earnings will be listed as "estimated earnings"
