Spirit of Play
I Would Sooner Play than Work
A Benjamin Franklin quote I really like:
"We do not stop playing because we grow old, we grow old because we stop playing".
When I started with WA I was advised; Chose a niche, maybe an interest or a hobby - something you are interested in, feel passionate about, something you like doing.
I couldn't think of anything except I like getting on the internet, I am interested in earning money off the internet ...where do I go from there?
Make your website your hobby
So I decided to do it this way; I made WA and creating affiliate marketing websites my hobby, and built a couple of websites on subjects that I had some interest in. I did not want to waste too much time procrastinating over niches.
Hobbies are meant to be fun
I am doing this for fun. Of course I would love to make big bucks out of it (wouldn't we all). Thing is though; I am learning things, I am spending a lot of time on the internet - I always have. The community in WA are great people pursuing similar interests. When you have a hobby you have a keen interest in it, it is easier - you don't have to grind it out.
Attitude and Content
Your attitude to what you are doing is reflected in your content. I keep it unserious and conversational. One good approach I read about creating content is to think of the subject you want to write (keywords help of course). Write down a list of pertinent questions relating to that subject and then write your content as though you are answering those questions in an email to a friend.
To me the end of that sentence is key - I don't look in a website to be lectured or condescended to, a friendly tone, like a friend is talking to me ...I would be more inclined to keep reading that. Affinity is a two way street - you like something and feel that something likes you. I try to create an affinity for my subject and my visitor.
Maybe I am just bantering
I research my posts and do my best to communicate and inform. Fact is though, I am bantering - that is my style, it is the way I talk to my family and friends. Maybe Google won't like it, maybe they will. What the hey, that's me - I can't be somebody else. I will give it my best shot in my own insouciant way. I am going to keep it fun (for me), my content may contain some personal asides and anecdotes (even personal photos). I am just happy to have a couple of websites out there on the net and building them up the way I want them - expressing myself.
Keep it fun and keep on
I keep thinking of it as a hobby, keep the fun in it - maybe that will work for you. One thing I know - soon as I start thinking of it as work I am in big trouble.
