Simple Steps to Great Content

Writing Content Need Not Be Scary

In fact, with just a few tips, you might discover you actually like writing!

First, I'd like to invite you to check out the training modules I've done on punctuation and methods of writing. You can find them on my profile:

I'm adding more soon, so keep watching. And if there is a topic you'd like me to cover, please leave me a comment or send me a private email.

Consider these tips for writing great content:

1- Keep it original. That's right, avoid plagiarizing at all costs. I usually run my own writing through Grammarly premium, just to make sure. When I have others submit writing, I run that through Copyscape.

Of course, most of what we write might appear in one form or another. But that is key: in one form or another, NOT in the same form.

And, while you are writing, give your content an extra boost. If your reference sites are good, make yours great. You are not aiming to be as good as the next site. You want to be better!

2- Keep it simple. Life gets complicated; your writing should not. Keep your sentences short and sweet. Break them up into smaller chunks. Avoid run-on sentences.

Remember that you are providing information and help to your readers. This isn't a place to dazzle them with your writing prowess. They don't care that you won the high school English award. It doesn't matter that you subscribe to the word of the day.

Feed them the information. And do so in an easy-to-read format.

3- Keep your sentences short and your paragraphs, too. 80-100 words or 4-5 lines for a paragraph is easier to read than those 300-word monstrosities. Simple chunks!

Break those chunks up with easy to scan visuals. Readers like bullet points, lists, images, and photos. Use them to make your points more clear and to build interest. Your readers may stay on the page longer if they don't feel overwhelmed by words.

4- Keyword stuffing is out. Avoid using the technique to hammer in your concepts, too. Repetition is great for learning but when your reader is bombarded with your keywords over and over, they leave the page. You are done.

5- Use quality content and provide information, rather than being salesy. Of course, you want them to notice the product or service you are promoting. But don't push them on it. I suggest my writers entice the readers to the products.

Think of it like a bakery. You smell those delicious cakes and cookies. That aroma makes your mouth water for a taste. And when you have a taste, you want to buy some to take home.

Likewise, if you explain the benefits and rewards of the product, they may want to jump on the chance to buy it. No coercing is necessary.

6- Keep in mind who your target audience is. Not everyone wants to know the value of that mixer. And some just don't care how much fun the new bicycle can be. Target the audience and then speak directly to them.

7- Images are like content. Don't use any that you don't have the legal right to use. There are plenty of free image sites available. And some great paid sites, too.

Even better, use your own photos and images. With some of the apps out there, you might find your creative side helps more than ever before.

8- Use creative anchor text. Of course, "click here" gets the reader's attention. But imagine how the reader reacts to a more customized one that describes the product and invites a click. "Find the best beach chair here!" adds some color to the lackluster click.

9- Know your purpose and goals before you begin writing. Have you noticed how some posts ramble on and on? It sometimes seems like even the writer has no idea what he is trying to say. Make your purpose well-known. Be bold. Not offensive, of course. But bold.

10- Use your call-to-action or CTA. These might be buttons, links, images, or other graphic that encourages the reader to action. Some posts might have one or two. Others might have several.

You say that you are writing a strictly informational post? No product affiliates mentioned? Ah, but you do have links to other posts on your site for them to visit don't you? Internal linking is essential. And so is a subscriber form. That's at least two to start with.

10 is enough for one post. I'll be adding more tomorrow, so look for the next post.

I hope these 10 are helpful to you. Please comment and let me know.
