I Am A Viking!

I love the History Channel, especially the show 'The Vikings'. Lagertha is a very strong and powerful woman who experiences hardships and many battles!

I recently visited our local hand surgeon due to a hard lump on the palm of my hand. The diagnosis was Dupuytren's Contracture or Viking's Disease. I had no idea what this was or even how to pronounce it. (DU-PA-TREN) Dupuytren's is a benign thickening of the palm's or finger's deep connective tissue or fascia. It usually starts on the palm of the hand with a small nodule or several nodules that can be felt and are initially not very hard. Nodules are typically the first indication of Dupuytren disease. (which is what I have now)

Dupuytren's contracture usually develops over years. The condition affects a layer of tissue that lies under the skin of your palm. Knots of tissue form under the skin — eventually creating a thick cord that can pull one or more fingers into a bent position. The affected fingers can't be straightened completely, which can complicate everyday activities such as placing your hands in your pockets, putting on gloves, shaking hands, or many other activities that we all take for granted. There are a number of treatments available to slow the progression of Dupuytren's contracture and relieve symptoms.

Many famous people have had this disease including, Ronald Reagan, Margaret Thatcher, Bill Murray, and even Chelsea Handler. It is not an uncommon disease, just an unknown one. One in 200 people will get this disease, usually between the ages of 50-60, but there are known cases of the disease in even 10-year-olds.

This disease is known to have come from a great army of Vikings in the year 865, when they landed on England's east coast. Dupuytren's is an inherited disease, and I knew that I had German and English heritage, but Viking?!! I have always been interested in my ancestry and have researched it on ancestry.com, and now I am going to check out my DNA at https://www.23andme.com I am very excited to learn more about my heritage!

Baron Guillaume Dupuytren (1777-1835) presented his findings in Paris more than 180 years ago, and the very first person to be diagnosed with the disease was Napoleon Bonaparte. The root causes of Dupuytren's disease still remain unknown and the disease is incurable.

Here is more history ~ http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC130590...

I do have a very positive outlook with Dupuytren's. Everyone's experience with the disease is different and not everyone's disease progresses to the crippling stage. Therefore, I know that right now, my disease needs no surgery (only injection), and could take many years to progress. That is great news!! Plus.......I am now a strong and true VIKING!!

Have a great weekend everyone!!

Hi Diane sorry to hear that but now you now the problem there has to be a solution and what is the cause of the problem ???
Is it nutrition and a lack of a certain group of things - many ailments today can easily be sorted out by nutrition

1

Thank you, Paul! I wish it was that simple.......Nutrition wise, I am really very mindful. I exercise regularly, eat organic foods and do not eat red meat. I avoid the nasty carbohydrates, use essential oils and take supplements every day :-) There are exercises that I can do for my hands, but other than that, there is no cure. It is in my genetics. I will keep researching......I joined the Dupuytren Foundation which is trying to find a cure :-) http://dupuytrens.org/

HI again - that is such a pity genitic wish I knew more - but it but you are beautiful, active and a great person so it aint so bad eh!!!

Hi Diane,
I'm sorry to hear that news about your disease, but it takes a strong woman to talk about it in such a public format. Thank you for bringing it to our attention. I wish you all the best with your treatment. Women Vikings rule!! Have a good weekend.

Thank you, Mary! I feel very comfortable sharing here at WA. The community here at WA is so caring and helpful and no one is judging us for who we are, what we look like, or diseases that we may be dealing with on a daily basis. That is what I love about it here. And Women Vikings DO RULE!! You have a great weekend, too :-)

My mother had this - I didn't realise it was hereditary either. Thanks for the info Diane :)

1

My mother did not have this and my father passed when I was only 25, so I am not sure what side of the family I inherited this from. That is why I have decided to do the DNA testing through 23andme. I have always wanted to do it, and there is no better time than today :-) Happy Saturday, Jude!

You too Diane :)

I have it on both hands, started to notice it in my late 50's. A friend also has it, has had 2 operations to try to correct it (second was to fix the stuff up caused by the first) with very little success.

Sorry to hear that, Geoff. It is in my right hand, but only in the beginning stages. At first, I thought it was a callus and then I took a closer look and thought it was a cyst. I figured that I should get it checked along with a lump that I have on the knuckle of my middle finger. I am having surgery in June to remove a tumor from my finger and then will get a cortisone shot in the nodule. We shall see how things go..........Thanks for your input, today. I appreciate it. :-)

At any rate, it is very cool to be a woman of strong Viking ancestry!

Haha......I do have to agree with that :-) Thanks, Rick!!

Vikings. The word berserk is derived from the word Norse word berserker's.

When the Vikings arrived at any location on the East cost of England. the under 21's (this is known as the warier years - no fear of death) were given magic mushrooms and big axes. These lovely young men would then go berserk and proceed to kill and meme anyone who could not run fast enough.

With your mental powers Diane, I'm sure this problem can be controlled.

1

Those young Vikings were crazzzzy!! And I do have special mental powers, being a Viking and all ;-)

2

My husband has a blood clotting condition (it clots easier than most) that comes from the Vikings as well!

1

Wow......There are also other diseases, such as Ledderhose Disease, which is the same as Dupuytren's but affects the arches of the feet & toes.

Wow! Excellent research Diane. Taught me a few things!

1

Thank you, PJ! I have learned quite a bit in the last few days, and as I mentioned, I do love history :-)

1
