Ten rules or writing a good article.

1. Write about what you know. Your knowledge, your expertise or your experience. For example I can write about flying, missions and ministry and growing up during World War 2. I cannot write about baking or gardening or how to be a good mother or how to play a guitar. You have certain knowledge in certain areas that others would like to read what you have written.

2. Write every day. You will get better when you write often. "Writer's block" is the universal excuse for a lazy person.

3. Don't wait for inspiration. before you write. Sit your butt down at your keyboard and start typing. Inspiration always comes after you start typing not before. Don't believe me?. Take this test. Sit down and start typing your thoughts. Soon you will be hit with an idea . You don't even have to think about it. Just write about it. See what happens.

4. Expand your vocabulary. Learn one new word every day. Look up words in a dictionary that you don't know. Here are some words for which you can start: abysmal, misanthropic, phobia, chivalry, metaphor, mundane, heretical, umbrage, xenophobic, ostentatious, oxymoronic.

Already know these words? Open your dictionary to any page and start reading.

5. Read good stuff, by the world's great authors. Shakespeare, Tennyson, Emerson, Melville,.Pogo Possum, et al.

6. Read the greatest book ever written, the Bible. You will be smarter than 90% of those who have never read it. And you will learn how to write poems, stories, parables, metaphors, and apocalyptic literature.

7.Write to help others, not to make money. Write positively not negatively.

8. Don't use profanity when you write thinking it will add color to your writing. It won't. It will only show that you have a very limited vocabulary and do not know how to express yourself with dynamic powerful words. And people won't want to read what you write.

9. Don't read pornography, trashy novels that center on sex, violence and morbidity. You will become what you think about. You will write what you think about, and what you read.

10. Don't correct as you type. It will slow you down. Go back after you have typed a sentence or two or paragraph and make the needed corrections. When you are all done, use spell check and correct spelling, grammar, sentence structure.

Wow. You just became a writer!

Carol

Thanks Carol

Thanks for the 10 rules, Pastor Derry. It serves as a guide.

I have a few more rules for myself.

Thanks Pastor Derry. This is great advice.

Thanks very much Mick.

A great post, Pastor Derry. Thank you.

It's just exactly what I need to get my keyboard humming! I find it so hard to produce content these days and have been that way for too long. Yes, maybe I'm lazy. I'm not sure about that!

Something I do which you mention, and I have known it to be wrong, is making corrections as I type.

I will follow your advice starting now and see what I can create.

~Valerie

Thanks much ValerieJoy.

OK, that was an excellent blog. I feel like I just walked out of church was totally convicted!! I WILL write tomorrow!!! No procrastination! No distractions!

~Debbi

NO, NO, NO! DEBBI! yOU HAVE TO SIT DOWN AND TYPE NOW. YOU CANNOT WAIT UNTIL TOMORROW! THERE WILL ALWAYS BE DISTRACTIONS. YOU WILL NEVER WRITE ANYTHING WORTH READING THIS WAY. SHOUTING INTENDED.

LOVE, PASTOR DERRY.
