Translation Geek Speak To English Appreciated.!

Hi Folks and SEO Hero's and fellow geeks!
Can someone explain the following text in plain old English.
HOW DOES GOOGLE HANDLE CANONICALISED DUPLICATE PAGES?
If pages are actual duplicates then canonical tags should work fine. If it’s similar content but not duplicate, then Google can assume that the canonical tag is incorrect and both pages will be indexed separately. Google also needs to crawl and index both pages even if they’re canonicalised, so adding canonical tags to duplicate pages doesn’t solve the issue of crawl budget. Remember that Google’s ability to crawl more or less doesn’t affect rankings, however, especially for smaller sites."
What is a Canonical tag & Cannonicalised page? And how are they set up in WP?

There is a lot related to this, but here is my basic understanding of this:
In short, this allows you to tell search engines which of your posts (out of possibly several with a similar content or targeted keyword) should be used as the main post (authority) for that targeted keyword.
How to use:
To have this working you have to check-in two options in AiO settings, the first and the third. This will open a box under your post where you can set your canonical url so the post which you are building will not be used as the main post, but it will still be indexed.
Thanks Jovo. Appreciated.
