Opening your links in a new window or tab.

I haven't been a premium member long enough yet to write any training so I figured I would just put this here to see if it could help anyone out.

I think we all know the importance of opening links, banners, ads, photos and such in a new window or tab. If any of your affiliate banners or ads aren't opening in a new tab then here is what to do.

It's a very simple piece of html code.

Go to the html of the link, banner or ad and at the very beginning look for <a href=

between the a and href simply add target='new'

So it should read:

<a target='new' href=

Now with Amazon it's a little different because it is iFrame and not html. So here is what you do with Amazon affiliate links:

Near the end of the code just before the width and height you will see ifr. Right after ifr you want to add:

&lt1=_new for opening in a new window or &lt1=_blank to open in a new tab. So the new code should read:

...&banner=0QERA3S6YE7N02MRZX02&f= ifr&lt1=_blank” width=”125″ height=”125″ scrolling=”no” border=”0″ marginwidth=”0″ style=”border:none;” frameborder=”0″>

Note: The additional code should not be bold. I did that just so you could see where it goes. Also make sure the new code is between ifr and "

That's it. Test it out.

David,
Thanks for the great advice. For the Amazon.ca link works great.

In the Amazon.com link, however, there is no "ifr". To make the Amazon.com link open in a new window look for:
;link_opens_in_new_window=false&
change false to true.

Hope this helps those looking for help on the American side of the border, or both sides like me :)

Regards,
Ed

outstanding info!

Still using this and sharing it - it's just a great blog! Olive

Brilliant, worked a treat. Many thanks. olive

My eBook failed to open link in new window/ tab, wonder why? you can take a look http://waystoavoidinternetscams.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/How-To-Handle-Internet-Con-Artist-eBook.pdf
For example on page 20, the link will direct you away from my eBook. Please advise.

Hi Paul,

I can open your PDF and it is displaying ok using the link you have provided. If I may say so...

Uploading Via Add Media:
If your pdf file has been uploaded through Add Media within a page or a post using the Insert/Edit Link window (this is what you are seeing when you highlight a text or image and click on the Chain icon in the Editor menu. You can check the "Open link in a new window/tab" checkbox to open your file in a new window.

Using href HTML tag:
You can use something like:
How To Handle Internet Con Artist

- How To Handle Internet Con Artist is the text being displayed and what is viewable to your visitors
- http://waystoavoidinternetscams.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/How-To-Handle-Internet-Con-Artist-eBook.pdf is the file or link being opened in a new blank window when visitors click on How To Handle Internet Con Artist as the text they can see.

Hope the above explanations help.

All the best,
Jhen

Hello, David! Very good info. I was looking for something like it just a week ago. Now I have it and owe you a good favor. Though I study the "Video Professor" 'learn HTML' I am just NOT good at it, so your idea is great help! I see you play guitar ...so do I, but my dad and his college chums of old are real pros at it. When you want to, see them at www.texasfootstompers.com. My dad is the research scientist of the bunch, the others: "uncle Frank", Texas National Executive Recruiter in Dallas TX and "uncle Lynn", Texas Senior Geoglogist in Singapore.

Great tech talk, and I can understand this thanks very much!

Hey Frank,
The reasoning behind having links open in another tab is so the person, or your customer, doesn't loose sight of your website. So when a link is clicked on it will open in a new tab up top with you sites tab still viewable next to it. If the link opens in the same tab or window your customer might get so far in to that site, say like Amazon, that without a little effort and hitting the back button a lot of times they can't get back to your site. If they found you through a search they probably will not remember the website name and you possibly just lost a customer.

Most users or customers can and probably will make the effort to get back to your site since they searched it in the first place. But better safe than sorry.

Hope this helped.

Much Success!
David

Hi David. Yes this helped a lot. I understand the reasoning behind links opening in another tab or a window. Thanks for being patient and I appreciate you getting back to me.............Frank

Hi David. Frank here. I am a little new at computers and how they operate. The information you give here sounds pretty good but, I don't seem to know about opening things in another tab or window. I don't understand the purpose of trying to open links or pages somewhere else. Could you take a moment longer and expound on your tutorial to include something about "in another window or tab"? Thanks Frank

Basically the reason you want things to open in new windows or tabs, is so that you do not drive your own traffic away. You want your traffic to stay with your site as that lends to more chances for engagement.

Thanks Jaweda2k. I am beginning to understand more about tabs and windows. I appreciate your help...........Frank

Excellent information David that has helped me a lot. Thanks
