The Ultimate Motivation. Burn the Ships!
First and foremost in order to succeed at anything in life one must have a burning desire to succeed. If you lack that desire, then I have to tell you that success would be extremely difficult to come by. But now that I have said that let me share with you the ultimate motivation. This story, of course, is one of the best examples of a burning desire that I have ever seen in print. Yes, it is a story of motivation, combined with succeeding or perishing. The story of the warrior Hernando Cortes and a small army that set out on what some might have believed to be an impossible conquest when they left the shores of Cuba in 1519 and sailed to Vera Cruz, where he was to lead his force against a force that far outnumbered his own. Of course, Cortes was a man of great determination and when they had landed Cortes gave the order to his men to ‘burn the ships” So without further ado here it is:
The following story has been adapted from the Napoleon Hill classic bestseller, “Think and Grow Rich”
A long while ago, a great warrior faced a situation which made it necessary for him to make a decision which insured his success on the battlefield. He was about to send his armies against a powerful foe, whose men far outnumbered his own. He had loaded his soldiers into boats, then sailed to the enemy’s country, and after unloading his men and equipment, he then gave the order to burn the ships that had carried them to their destination. While addressing his men before the first battle, he said, “You see the boats going up in smoke. That means that we cannot leave these shores alive unless we win! We now have no choice—we win, or we perish! Well, guess what happened? They won.
Being a motivational guru of sorts I personally love that story of burning the ships. It delivers to the reader the message that there is no other option than to succeed. We either accomplish our objectives, defeat our foe or they will pile our dead bodies in a heap on the beach and strike a match to us. When any task is approached with such determination it is very hard for us to not succeed. I don’t know about you, but living and breathing to me is a greater motivator than dying and decaying. And if I have to pass through this life, I would much rather pass through as a success, a winner. So I choose to win, I desire to win, I have a burning desire to win, and with those elements combined well I will win, why? because I will not accept any alternative.
Every person who wins in any undertaking must be willing to remove all avenues of retreat and to burn his ships. Only by so doing can one be certain that the state of mind known as a BURNING DESIRE TO WIN will be maintained, and that desire is essential to all of life’s successes.

I know the story well. Is that where the expression "A burning desire" comes from.
I do sometimes feel that people work hard but do not expect success and then are unprepared for it when it does arrive.
Race horses do not always want to be in front of their mates so if they find themselves , alone, in front, they will sometimes slow down and let their friends catch up with them.
Trainers try fitting them with blinkers so they can only see in front.
Perhaps we need some blinkers to only be able to see the success in front of us?
I do believe that is where the expression burning desire does come from but don't quote me on that I might be wrong.
People often are not capable of achieving great success because they simply have not accepted within themselves that they were born for greatness as each and every one us was. Our creator would have us settle for nothing but greatness, but sometimes we simply refuse it, not knowing how to deal with it.
That is absolutely true about the horses as the blinders only allow the horse to focus on forward, and yes you are right, meybe we all should have blinders on.

Terrrrrific! I now say jump in the pool and learn how to swim. Some say "But what if I drown", while I say " Yea, I swam". I love it doctor, I love it.
My dad threw me in the water when I learned to swim, natural instincts do kick in because I surely learned to swim that day.
