The Caspian Sea
The Caspian Sea is Alternately Known as the "World's Largest Lake," the "Largest Inland Body of Water in the World," and a Sea in its Own Right.
The Name Caspian Comes From the Caspi, an Ancient People Who Lived in Transcaucasia, Southwest of the Sea.
Over 130 Rivers Flow Into the Sea, Including the Volga River, the Ural River, and the Kura River.
The Caspian Contains 3.5 Times More Water, by Volume, Than All 5 of North America's Great Lakes Combined!
What I Did Not Know, When I Wrote the Following Song, is That the Caspian is in the Middle of a Somewhat Volatile Political Region.
In Fact, All 5 Caspian "Littoral" States Maintain Naval Forces on the Sea.
In Other Words, if a Country Has Land Bordering the Caspian Sea, Their Navy Patrols the Waters of the Sea!

We Don't Want To Create An International Incident By Becoming Entangled With a Russian Gunboat in Politically Ambiguous Waters.
So, if Recreational Sailing on the Caspian Becomes an Issue, We'll Simply Motor Down the Volga River, Through the Volga-Don Canal, Which Connects the Volga and the Don Rivers, Through the Sea of Azov, and into the Mediterranean Sea!
But, Let's Check Out Our Route With Cruise Director Vera, First, Shall We?
(As Always, Fresh Fruit For All Passengers!)
THE CASPIAN SEA
When Ah-Nah-Toe-Lee
Met Mar-Gah-Ree-Tah,
He Said, "Ree-Tah, You're For Me!"
Mar-Gah-Ree-Tah Whispered,
"Tohl-Yah,"
"Take Me Down to the Caspian Sea!"
"All Our Comrades For Miles Around,"
"They Will Plainly See,"
"Me and You, and Uncle Wanya,"
"We're a Happy Family."
Down On the Caspian Sea,
We Can Be
What We Want To Be.
Take Me Down To the Caspian Sea.
Take Me Down To the Caspian Sea.
Ah-Nah-Toe-Lee
Said To Mar-Gah-Ree-Tah,
"Ree-Tah Come To My Place."
"I've Got Some Wodka and Some Fresh Made Borscht,"
"And I Want To Kiss Your Face."
Mar-Gah-Ree-Tah
Said, "Sweet Tol-Yah,"
"Before You Kiss a Girl, You Warn Her,"
"I'm Glad We're Dating, Uncle Wanya's Waiting,"
"Just Around the Corner."
Down On the Caspian Sea,
We Can Be
What We Want To Be.
Take Me Down To the Caspian Sea.
Take Me Down To the Caspian Sea.
Let's Go Sailing On the Wolga River,
Uncle Wanya, You and Me,
Soon We'll Motor With the Other Boaters,
On the Waves of the Caspian Sea.
Down On the Caspian Sea,
We Can Be
What We Want To Be.
Take Me Down To the Caspian Sea.
Take Me Down To the Caspian Sea.

GREAT Rick! I love this post. Maybe that's why the Russians as Soviets tried so hard to take over a strip of Iran between Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan and were forced to give it back after the Yalta accords. It would then have been their sea. They called their patrols a Flotilla instead of a full scale fleet. Splurgin on the sturgeon and spoilin with the oilin these days.
Good thing you weren't there in the days of Chikluxub, the dinosaur destroying asteroid that wiped out most surface life on earth. You still have to deal with oil soaked beaches..
To be safe from the oil and get the most commercial bang for the buck, get on the other side of the Yucatan Peninsula and head to Cancun ass the newest renowned beach.
Ha ha the Caspian Sea! How intriguing. Yes i want to visit it too! Before I had travelled anywhere in the world (except New Zealand - but that was back in the days before you needed a passport to enter NZ from Oz so it doesn't count), I dropped a pin on a map because I didn't know where to travel too. And guess where it landed? Yes you are right - near the the Caspian Sea! And so many rivers - that's amazing.
I have been to many countries since ie Greece Singapore China Cambodia Thailand but not to the Middle East. Yet!
Thanks for sharing the Beautiful Caspian Sea Rick and your wonderful song too!
cheers Debbie
Just imagine writing about the Caspian Sea out of all places! Or did you know that you would meet a perfect cruise director? lol
You have proved again you can write about anything and make it exciting. Super-interesting...:)
I'm so happy you like it! Thanks so much for allowing me to use your great picture. It added a special element to the blog, I think! Was I alright on the details? :)
Feel privileged because of being mentioned in your blog... because of you using my picture...When you become really famous, I will be proudly saying that there were times when this celebrity discussed with me which of my pictures to take for his blog on my country.. oh gosh..Everything's super-impressive....Not everything's true to the fact, I believe... but it doesn't spoil the picture... Poets don't need to operate real facts... They need to be guided by feelings and impressions. You are wonderful, as ever...:)
Can you enlighten me on where I was off from the facts? I tried to research first, of course, but sources are notoriously unreliable and sometimes out of date. You have first-hand knowledge. Where did I go wrong? I'll catch up later, so i can go mow again. :(
OK... will do it today.. I will check on some facts for you a little later. But I might as well be wrong... need to see.. Just need to leave for a while now...:)
No, no, Rick... I was wrong in my main assumption. I thought it was lake Baikal that was the biggest lake...but it's the biggest of those having fresh, not salted water...
Sorry.... I think I gave you some bad time.(You can fire me as the cruise director, by the way... )And as for the Caspian, we can call it both the lake and the sea...You did a beautiful research... sorry.
"The Caspian Sea is the largest enclosed inland body of water on Earth by area, variously classed as the world's largest lake or a full-fledged sea."
And there are two small things, but will tell you later... now really leaving...:)
http://justfunfacts.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/caspian-seal.jpg a small gift for you...(tongue out) still remember your fishes...:)
http://www.nationsonline.org/oneworld/map/Caspian-Sea-map.htm
here is a map of the countries which surround the Caspian Sea... yours is not correct.... Georgia, Azerbaidzhan, Armenia were parts of the Soviet Union... so it's a kind of wrong to put these countries outside the Soviet Union on the map and at the same time put the Soviet union there..
And one thing has to do with transliteration. Russan name "Vanya" should be spelled with V, not W.
Also, borsch- without "T"
That's all... Brill, fab, awesome...- what else?
The map was an old map showing where the Caspia people lived. I used "W" instead of "V" for dialect purposes, so when I perform it, I sound more "Russian." Same for "Wodka." :)
and it's still illogical to place the country and place separately parts of the same country whatever the period is...don't argue about your dialect things... you know better...:)
That's how I sing it, Vera. I know the difference between vodka and wodka. We have vodka, too. :)
oh maybe... You will tell me abour your dream and I will tell you about mine, the one I saw after those monstrous fishes..:)
oh, no, no... I even liked my dream... you are forgiven totally and unconditionally.. lol..:).
Actually, that was a nice dream...I saw the Creator, not the creatures... But it could have been the other way round... hahaha..where does our mind wander when we are sleeping?..:)
No, it was not that pathetic ( pathetic in the meaning big), it was the other Creator...Blog Creator, I mean...hahaha..:)
Yeah... Don't remember a single detail, as if somebody erased it... but remember the impression... it was good..After all, we were going to take a ride on a hot air-balloon... maybe we were discussing preparations for it..or drank wodka,or vodka, or ate strawberries dipped with chocolate...don't know..:)
oh yeah...Sometimes they a kInd of reflect reality, sometimes we are being warned about something that might happen...very little investigated area...:)
me too...I can wake up at night in the middle of a dream and invent it a little and then see further(as if i make a film with myself as the main character..) crazy, yeah? :)
what was it callled? "The Naked Gun", I think with Lesley Nilsen... You can laugh your head off...:)
I even feel like watching it now. Maybe I will.Or maybe will listen to your songs.Would love to have more of them...:)
though, not sure about borsch... it can go as borshch- now took some time looking for that. It's definitely the sound which hasn't even close resemblance to any of English sounds...But I could teach you say that...:)
Will be more than happy to hear more. Do you compose the music too? The tunes are so catchy...:)
Can you imagine- I don't listen to my favourite Doors, and BGees, and Cranberries, and Credence, and Eric Clapton- I listen to you...And I like it..Of course personal component, or the fact that I know you plays the important role here, but I wouldn't listen to what I don't like..:)
Thanks Rick - Talk later - I need to get my website finished - such a dunderhead and not tech savvy enough - Need some help.
To be honest, never thought much about the Caspian Sea. You have turned it into a very intriguing body of water. And you lyrics, superb, as usual.
Hahah really enjoy reading this. I like the way you write. The beautiful pictures make it more appealing,
Hi-Thank you. I'm glad to provide a brief respite for you. Thank you for your comment!-Rick :)
