Can I create my own theme, and if so, how?

I see Hugh was on top of the question. Gotta love this community!

Yep, very thorough answer, Hugh! Wish I knew as much as you...

You can search WordPress themes in the internet, and if your ideal theme is not listed in the repository, you can down load the theme file and upload it to your site.

Some premium themes offer more customization options and you can look into them as well.

If you are still not happy with premium themes, I'd say you need to look into some drag-and-drop page builders, either page builder plugin (such as Beaver Builder and Elementor) or themes come with drag-and-drop builder (Thrive Architect, Yootheme, Divi, etc). Some of the builders offer free version some don't, you need to check them out.

You can build your own theme if you know coding, of course; or hire someone to do it.

Hope this can help.

Hugh

Thanks, Hugh!

I have no idea how to create your own theme from scratch I think it would be a lot of work. There are a lot of free ones on WordPress and if you can't find one there you can search the Internet for free WordPress themes. If you find one you can download it and install.

Thanks, Lynne!

So far as I know, you have to use one of the themes offered, as they are part of the WordPress platform. There are any number of possibilities. When I started I had no idea how to choose a theme, so I just chose one that looked nice. Now I'm thinking I might change my theme at some point. However, that's something we can do. If you start with a theme and find it does not have all you are looking for, you can change. Make a little list of all the things you want to find in your theme, and try to find a theme that has most of those attributes.

Good luck! It is hard to know what is ideal when you are just starting.
