What We Can Learn From Dogs
I have had dogs all my life, mostly rescues, though now we do have a purebred Glen of Imaal Terrier, Malachi, as well as our boy Elijah who is a Bernese crossed with a Maremma Sheepdog. That's him in the photo.
In 2020 we lost our Danny Boy and that was so very hard on both my wife and I. Now I recently joined a group on Facebook called 'The Rainbow Bridge'. It's for owners who have recently had their beloved companion leave for the Rainbow Bridge. Like it was for us, someone who has lost a dog goes through an intense, sometimes extended, period of grief. Hard to hold back the tears as you read someone describing the pain of loss they feel at losing a beloved companion.
It is hard not to share their pain but, as I was sifting through the posts, the thought occurred to me. Dog lovers will understand the very special bond that can develop between a person and a dog. The love a dog gives is unconditional. But they are with us for just a whisper it seems. So the thought was this. Is this to teach us to love as much as we can while we have the chance? And the more I thought about it, the more I believe that that has to be true. Some are lucky enough to have their dogs for 15, 16 even 17 years. But, in the grand scheme of things that is not a lot of time.
But, in thinking that this may be one of the lessons we learn from having a dog, it most certainly means that we should all love one another as much as we can. After all, we too are here for but a whisper.

Iām with you there 1000%! We love them and donāt stay long enough! I have about 3 dogs that stayed for about 16 to 17 years ~ and thatās not even long enough!
And the unconditional love our dogs share is something so precious!
I can relate to the joys of having dogsā¦and the pains of losing them!
Cheers,

Fortunately, Grant, there are many more out there that we can bond with and give a good home too! We can always remember the ones that have passed, but the excitement of finding the next member of the family is always exciting too!

I agree Jeff. After our Danny was taken from us we tried to find another pup and we eventually bought our first pure-bred Glen of Imaal. He's a bit of a rough-neck but inside he's such a softie. He's won some points toward his Canadian championship and, for us, this is an exciting new venture. We now have a big brother for him and the two of them are really something together...too many stories to tell :D So I agree, the new family members are always a treat!
I will certainly agree with you, Grant! The Blog Dogs were the last of a line of dogs that I had for several years. An ex of mine has three adult dogs from former litters of their parents too!
