What I Wish I Knew About Choosing a Niche When I Started.
When I first got started here at WA, I struggled somewhat in choosing my first niche. I spent tons of time worrying about it. I thought I needed to pick the perfect subject from day one, and if I got it wrong my whole business would fall apart.
Looking back at it though, I wish I knew a few things that would have made the process a little bit easier.
The first thing is that your niche does not have to be the perfect one when you start out. I really believed it had to be. I thought I needed the most profitable idea, the most popular subject, and something everybody would love. But what I learned is that you only need something you can write about and something that has people interested.
You do not need to know everything right from the beginning. You will improve and learn more about your chosen subject as you go.
Another thing I wish I knew is that your niche can grow with you through time. I used to think that once I chose a niche, I was stuck with it forever. And that is just not true at all.
You can change direction slightly, and expand on things along the way. Sometimes your niche becomes clearer only after you start creating the content. Your experience helps you see where you might want to go next.
I also wish I knew that choosing a niche is not actually the hardest part. Writing out the helpful content, understanding what your audience needs, and building your site is where you make your progress. I wasted too much time trying to find the “best” niche instead of just getting on with things.
It would have been a lot easier if I had just picked something and got started.
One thing that helped me later on was asking myself a simple question. Could I write about this subject regularly. Not just for one week or one month, but regularly over time. When the answer was yes, the light came on.
It helped me avoid picking something just because it looked profitable on the surface.

Another thing I learned is that niches do not have to be that complicated. I used to really overthink them. I thought they needed to be unique or original. But, there is room in almost every niche if you bring to it your own point of view and your own experiences. You just have to be helpful.
I also learned that choosing a niche becomes easier when you stop trying to impress everyone. The people who relate to your writing and your style will be your audience in the end. The rest will move on and that is normal. You cannot write for everyone. You only really need to speak with the people who want to know what you have to say.
The last thing I wish I knew is that choosing a niche is actually just the start of your journey. Your niche gives you direction, but it does not lock you in. It is a starting point that helps you learn, write, and then grow.
Once I realised that, the whole process felt a lot less stressful.
So if you are new here on the platform and are still trying to decide on your niche, do not worry about picking the perfect one. Just go with something that interests you, something you can learn about, and something that has an audience. You will see how much clearer things get as you keep going.
Just for you to know, my original niche that I chose back in 2014 here is long gone. As I got into the training and learned so many other things, I finally decided my first niche was not to be. I was happy with the learning curve along the way, but I changed my direction. And I am not ashamed to admit that my first effort did not go so well.
Thats life!
How about you guys? Did you struggle choosing a niche when you first started, or did you already know which direction you wanted to take?
Thanks for reading.

Hey Chris,
I really appreciate your honesty here. You nailed the exact struggle most people face. They think that they need the perfect niche before they can even start. That’s why I built The Amazing Niche Master Process. It’s designed to take the stress out of niche selection and turn it into a growth journey.
Your points line up perfectly:
- You don’t need the perfect niche, you need one you can sustain.
- Niches evolve as you grow, and that’s built into the process.
- Content and consistency matter more than chasing trends.
- Authenticity is the real competitive edge.
The Amazing Niche Master puts these lessons into a step‑by‑step system so creators don’t waste months in paralysis.
Instead of trial and error, my system offers a clear path: pick a niche you can write about, frame it with your own voice, build modular content, and iterate until authority emerges.
So yes—your story is the struggle, and The Amazing Niche Master is the solution.
I offer a paid Niche Selection Service outside of these walls. Inside WA, I offer the service free of charge.
I even created a workbook for this, listed on Kindle.
If anyone with WA is struggling with Niche Selection, send me a note, and I will help tighten you up.

A quick search - master niche blogging for retirement will land you in my services, as well as Amazing Niche Master.
Niche Selection is the #1 Reason Blogs Fail. #2 is Consistency. I have all of it laid out and help people avoid these pitfalls. It doesn't hurt when you are also promoting WA.
I try to catch people's questions about niche selection when they come up.
Thanks for the great advice as well.

I am gonna try and check out your resources now.. and maybe I will write a post around it for my own website and link to you so people can access you as a resource... I will see what I do :)
Since many here are non native English speakers,
I encourage all to publish in their own language
and target their own local markets...

I think that's a good idea. In my case, although English is my second language, it now feels like my first - but I do stick with British English and generally books that are available on Amazon UK.

@Fleeky Maybe a dumb question then but does Jaaxy then work with all languages? I thought it only worked with the english language.
Thanks for sharing Chris. I have been through the same process starting off. I am over thinking everything instead of just starting something. A teacher once told me "something half done is better then nothing done". I need to get on with it.
This is very true... if you dont start at all.. you cant make the mistakes, and you get nothing at all done in the end.
Thanks for reading.. I appreciate it!

"you only need something you can write about and something that has people interested"
Exactly... I over complicated things and had such a difficult time figuring out my niche. Also agree with if it's something you can continue writing about. I've chosen niches which became dead ends for me because I couldn't think of anything else to write about.
And that's key - put your own spin on everything - great way to bring new life into any niche!
Yep.. all really good points you make here my friend.... It is good to be at least interested is the direction you choose
