Are 'Royalty Free' Images Really Free?

I think 'Royalty Free' (RF) is an unfortunate term because it gives the impression of a free image but this is not the case and it's something worth clarifying.

You could fall into the trap of thinking that the lovely image you are about to download is actually free for you to use in any way you want. It is true that RF images can be used for as many projects as you wish for as long as you want ie. in perpetuity (certain restrictions may apply such as not using the images for offensive projects etc.).

The actual meaning of RF images is that you do not have to pay royalties on it, but you do have to pay a one off licence fee and this price usually depends upon the size of image you wish to purchase. The higher the resolution, the more expensive it will be.

Unfortunately, the term is sometimes used to denote completely free and this causes some confusion. Make sure you read the licence agreement with the image you want to use and be sure to credit the image to the artist when you are asked to do so. Anyway, it's just good manners and I think proves that you appreciate the free use of the image and also gives assurance to visitors of your integrity and professionalism.

The image above is a royalty free image but in this case, you have my permission to use it if you wish as long as you credit the image ©Power & Syred.

There are some great free images out there but if you really want that RF image, quite often the licence fee is small enough to be worth the price and the image is then yours to use for life!

Thanks for reading it Skip. Ches

The use of images/photography can quickly become a "slippery slope." Thanks for such a clear explanation of what to do, and not to do, when using RF images. Thanks Ches!
