The Dumbing Down

Back in the mid-1970's, my dad began to speak to several of us of a change in society. He referred to it as the dumbing down of America. He was a highly intelligent man and had been classified at a genius level.

It was his belief that the middle class would be eradicated while the rich would continue to improve in power, status and money. The poor would greatly increase and be herded into a mass group who was totally dependent on the government and clueless to what was happening to them or going on around them.

At the time, I disagreed with him feeling that the middle class was the backbone of society. How accurate was he? Well, reading, writing, and arithmetic have been replaced. Common Sense is a forgotten tool. People no longer worry about class in their dress or language.

Men are made to feel guilty for being men. Families are falling apart as the family unit is no longer taught. While America was once great, we are being made feel guilty for being an American. We can't speak our mind as we might offend someone.

It is wrong to stand for anything since we might offend someone else by our beliefs. Why I disagreed with my dad at amny points when I was younger, just this one point is enough to show me I had a lot to learn back then.

Was it Mark Twain who said his Dad was pretty stupid ... until Twain got in his 30s or 40s? He then realized how much his father had learned...

I'm glad your health has improved and agree with everything you've said. :-)

Thanks for reading and commenting Cathy!

It's all by design too, I've been following this stuff for quite a while now. People are more concerned about celebrities than whats going on in the world. The people that we vote for to represent us lie and cheat and are simply corrupt!

I have a large screen TV with 100's of channels yet most days I rarely find anything worth watching because I can feel my IQ dropping as it's on. I feel sorry for the coming generations, the word we're heading into isn't as pleasant as the world I grew up in where I was allowed to voice an opinion and think for myself!

Exactly right on that. I wish people could understand all the negative stuff on tv and how it really affects them.

I cannot say how it is for the people of the USA however I would say your dad and my mum had some wise insights to the way society is moving

Yes Katie, it is sad how they seem to be separating the masses. In the US, the middle class had been carrying most of the taxes and responsibility. As the middle class is being killed off, the US economy is falling down more and more.

Without further ado, I'm sad to say that your dad was a VERY smart man!!!!

Yes though I use to debate that earlier in my life. I wish now I would have had more respect and learn much of what he was trying to teach me.

Accompanied by lack of initiative and adventure. One daughter likes to say " I'm smart like you used to be, Dad."

I am still amazed how much and how fast my dad learned after I turned 25

Thanks for the information from your father that you shared.

Regards.
