Tips For Avoiding Scams

While researching materials for my niche I came across an article that appeared in the Las Vegas Sun newspaper recently in which an attorney was responding to the question, “How to settle debt without being scammed”.

He argued that if you are getting calls from a company promising to settle your credit card debt for a small percentage of what you owe, in exchange for an upfront fee for their services, don’t do it because It is not a legitimate way to settle your debt. It is an illegal method of debt relief scamming that can cost you thousands of dollars.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) tried to curb scams like this in June 2013 by establishing rules to prohibit debt relief agencies from operating over the phone or internet, and to prohibit debt settlement companies from collecting upfront fees before meeting with the client.

But despite these efforts by The FTC, he still meets several people each week who have paid for debt relief services from an over-the-phone vendor and have been ripped off.

Here are his tips for avoiding scams
