Pointy Ear Dogs could be your next niche campaign.
I have a particular preference for dogs with erect and pointed ears. They have a good sense of sound and can detect the mechanical vibration from the engine of their owner’s car as the owner approaches home. There are other animals with better hearing ability, but they are not as domesticated as dogs.

Dogs with pointed ears are considered good security or watch dogs. They have the capacity to detect low-level sounds long before the human ear can discern it. A sound is a traveling wave just like light but is invisible to the naked eye.
Dogs hear at a frequency rate of 40 to 60,00hz while the human range is between 20 and 20,000Hz. So on average, dogs can hear two times better than humans. Loud noise such as firecrackers are very disturbing to dogs
Dogs use around eighteen muscles in their ears to adjust to the direction of the sound. Dogs with infected ears can lose their balance. What a pity puppies are born deaf, because if they could hear they might yipe less.
You may wonder which animal has the best hearing. Apparently, it is not an animal but an insect; a moth, with the ability to hear sounds of up to 300 kHz. Elephants have been shown swaying to the sound of classical music.
The animals that hear better than dogs are: a porpoise, the beluga whale, bats, rats, and mice, have better hearing than dogs, but none of them are your average house pet.
Dogs can even listen to the vibration of termites in walls. Dog breeds with the best ability to hear are Chihuahua, Schnauzers, Boston Terrier, American Eskimo Dog, Miniature Pinschers, and Schipperke.
The Chihuahua is my personal preference for an erect pointy ear dog, and it detects sound way in advance before I can hear it. But they are known for having problems with displaced knee caps and bad hearts. It is among the top 10 recommended watch dogs.
There are two distinct breeds of Chihuahua, the short hair breed and the long hair breed recognized by the kennel clubs and offsprings from mating the two breeds are not recognized.
My first mistake was feeding my chihuahua meat every day, and now it will not eat dog food. They enjoy bits of cheese, mangoes, a drop of ice cream. Too much dairy will have you cleaning up after them, not to mention the flatulence. Pastrami, no problem but he refuses to eat pork. Talk about a dog with an acquired taste.
It is critical for them not to overeat because their feet cannot support the extra weight. Also, airlines will not allow you to bring it onboard with you over a certain weight, and you'd have to put in a kennel with the luggage.
The male Chihuahua can have a large sexual organ for their size. I took mine to play with a friend's dog. He became aroused, and when my friend saw it, she immediately picked up her female dog and would not put her back down until we left. Embarrassing to say the least.
Other dogs with pointed and erect ears are Akita Alaskan Malamute, American Eskimo Dogs, the super hyper Australian Cattle Dog, Australian Terrier, Basenji, Belgian Malinois, Belgian Sheepdog. The military canine unit uses the last two dogs above.
More dogs with pointy, erect ears are Belgian Tervuren, Boston Terrier - erect and rounded, Brussels Griffon, German Shepherd, and the Yorkshire Terrier. The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is the favorite dog of the Queen of England.
Dogs with pointed ears but not recognized by the kennel organizations are the Portuguese Podengo, Peruvian Inca Orchid, and Berger Picard. The French Bulldog has upright rounded ears.
Some other breeds may or may not have pointed ears such as Dobermans Pinschers, The Boxer, and The Great Dane. Cropping can cause the ears of some breeds to stand upright.

I have 2 chihuahuas (1 white long hair and the other a black short hair) and also a papillon. The black short hair thinks he's a pit bull & attacks strangers (hard to break him of the habit).
Interesting article & I thank you for it. Mark
Thank you for your comments, Mark. If you get a third dog, make it a Chihuahua. A friend of mine had two Chihuahuas and a poodle. They got jealous of the poodle and killed it. I'll add this to my blog.

Dogs, in general, are awesome. I'm not sure if I have an ear preference... Certainly I like the look of pointy-eared dogs, though all of my dogs have had floppy ones (my first dog, a Springer Spaniel was able to detect my father's car engine; he ignored any other car going by, but always reacted to my father's approach).
Growing up, my neighbour had a Chihuahua and it was a yappy little thing, but is was cute. I couldn't really play with him because he didn't like kids, but I used to watch him for hours when I was little.
Lots of great information in this post.
Craig, even though your dog was not a pointy ear, it detected your father's car engine. I guess this trait is in all dogs.
Yes some are friendly, and some are finicky, and some are downright mean.
Thank you.
