Hi, WAers!

I just found out LinkedIn has two different features: Posts and articles. I had a professional profile there for many years but only used it once Michael blogged here on WA about this.

So, let's imagine you have a fantastic idea, valuable industry knowledge, or a captivating story to share with the professional world. In an ideal world, it is natural that we all want to make an impact, establish our expertise, and connect with like-minded individuals.

Guess what? LinkedIn provides the perfect social media platform for this business purpose. With its two key content formats - LinkedIn posts and LinkedIn long-form articles - you can engage your audience and make your mark in the professional realm.

I explored and discovered the difference between LinkedIn Posts and LinkedIn long-form articles. This blog post will explore the benefits, features, and differences between these content types, helping you and me to determine which suits your goals and aspirations the best.

What is a LinkedIn Post and Its Benefits

LinkedIn posts are like short, snappy updates, allowing you to share your thoughts, ideas, and experiences with your network.

They appear in the main feed (like Facebook or Instagram), capturing your connections' attention as they scroll through their LinkedIn profiles.

LinkedIn posts a maximum character limit of 1,300. That forces you to be concise and impactful at the start.

LinkedIn posts benefits and features are:

  • Generate immediate engagement: Since they appear directly in the feed, they have a higher chance of catching your eye.
  • Easily shareable: Allowing your content to reach a wider audience beyond your immediate network. This can lead to new relationships, increased visibility, and potential career opportunities.
  • Short updates or Thoughts: You can use these posts to share timely information, industry news, or personal insights with your network.
  • Encourage conversations and gather feedback: By regularly posting on LinkedIn, you can establish yourself as a thought leader in your field and increase your visibility among peers.
  • Encourages more immediate reactions, Such as comments, likes, and shares.

In crafting a LinkedIn post, the focus should be on creating high-quality content to stand out.

Think of it like writing a mini-blog WA blog post or your other SM posts, which appear on a feed where you can share valuable insights, tips, or industry news.

What is LinkedIn Long-Form Articles and its Benefits

LinkedIn long-form articles are more extensive than traditional blog posts or articles. They allow you to dive deeper into a topic, explore complex ideas, and tell compelling stories.

Interestingly, these articles have a significantly higher limit of around 110,000 characters. So, you'll be able to create in-depth content showcasing your expertise and captivating your readers.

LinkedIn long-form articles benefits and features are:

  • Opportunity to showcase your writing skills and thought leadership: Your long-form articles have a dedicated space on your LinkedIn profile, providing a permanent record of your expertise. It's a great way to build your portfolio of your knowledge and share it with other business professional.
  • Unique Search Engine Optimization (SEO): LinkedIn long-form articles also have a unique search engine optimization (SEO) advantage. They can attract organic traffic to your profile and increase your visibility beyond the LinkedIn platform. This can be particularly valuable if you want to establish yourself as an industry expert or promote your brand.
  • Dive deeper into a topic: This allows you to showcase your expertise and offer valuable insights to your audience. Articles typically create more long-term value by providing evergreen content that readers can refer to over time.
  • Articles also have higher chances of being featured on Pulse - LinkedIn's publishing platform - which can significantly expand your reach beyond your immediate connections.

The benefit and the feature of using both posts and articles is the ability to build credibility within your industry. You can demonstrate knowledge and expertise in specific areas by consistently sharing relevant content through posts or articles on LinkedIn. This helps strengthen relationships with existing connections while attracting new ones who value what you bring.

The Differences Between LinkedIn Posts and LinkedIn Long-Form Articles

While LinkedIn posts and long-form articles offer valuable ways to engage with your audience, they have distinct differences that can influence your content strategy.

LinkedIn posts focus:

  • More immediate and temporary. They appear in the main feed and quickly get pushed down as new content fills the space.
  • Their impact and visibility are relatively short-lived, So you must create recent posts to maintain engagement. Requires concise writing to make an impact.
  • Involves: A thought-provoking question, a quick tip, or a compelling statement that grabs attention.
  • It is ideal for sharing: Quick updates, reactions to industry news, or snippets of more significant ideas.
  • They are perfect For capturing the attention of busy professionals scrolling through their feeds and looking for bite-sized content.

By contrast, LinkedIn long-form articles focuses:

  • More long-lasting presence on your profile allows readers to discover and engage with them anytime.
  • Better suited for in-depth analysis, storytelling, or step-by-step guides.
  • They allow you to showcase your expertise and build a stronger connection with your audience through more substantial content.
  • Detailed information can include subheadings, images, and multimedia elements like videos or infographics.

Another difference is how they are displayed on your profile.

Posts reside under the feed in the home section and disappear from view as new ones are posted.

Articles have their dedicated team on your profile and remain visible even after publishing recent articles.

On your profile on the home page, it will show Start a post, then below that. You will see three buttons: Media, Event, and Write article.

So that you know, please don't follow me there on LinkedIn. We WAers already are following each other on this platform. I am not like Kyle or the other members to follow each other outside of WA.
When considering visibility within LinkedIn, posts have a wider reach as they are displayed in users' feeds. LinkedIn long-form articles have the potential to gain more traction in the long run as they are searchable on search engines like Google. Like most social media platforms, you can schedule your posts as well.

Final Thoughts

Utilizing LinkedIn posts and long-form articles can significantly enhance your content strategy and help you achieve various goals. LinkedIn posts allow instant engagement and sharing, while longer pieces will enable you to showcase your expertise and make a lasting impression.

Your decision between the two should be based on your objectives, content type, and audience preferences. It would be great to use both. It can be time-consuming, just as writing blog posts for your website or using other long-form written content like Medium.

PS. Question for Discussion: Have you used LinkedIn posts or written long-form articles on that platform? If so, please do share. I am starting to learn more about how to use their features and plan to create some posts just to get started.
