Keys for Persistent Writing

Here are a few tips to become a persistent writer:

1. Let your writing goals be clear. Have a list of short-term and long-term goals written down. And every day and week, make sure that you take steps to complete one or two of your writing goals. This will give you self-confidence and joy over time.

2. Keep a consistent time to write so that your family knows when you will be writing. That way they know that if it is morning or evening, you will be writing in your office.

3. Keep your writing time non-negotiable. Nothing should stand between you and actually get the writing done-except valid emergencies, of course. So, if you are supposed to write, and you have already told your family about your writing schedule when the time comes to write, go into your office, close the door and write.

4. After you complete your writing time, give your family duties top priority. If you were supposed to write for an hour and a half after dinner, work for that time, and then when your time ends, plan to do something with your family. Have a date night with your spouse. Or, just sit down and chat with a latte. Do something that will really help them feel that you also care about them. Then they will be less likely to impinge on your writing time.

5. Create balance in your writing life. This is crucially important. I find that a lot of my writer friends either write for endless hours, or they don't write at all on any consistent basis. Some writers write a lot for a while, and they don't for weeks. This is not consistent and it doesn't create balance in your writing career. You can't complete manuscripts if you write sometimes like a friend and other times you don't at all.

6. Make sure that your writing is one of your top priorities. That way, you will make sure that you get to your desk to write every day. And this is very important to your success as a writer.

By following these tips, writers will become persistent. By creating structure and balance, it is easier to be a persistent writer.

Persistence is one of the keys to success for a writer. However, it is also one of the keys to writer self-confidence and joy. A persistent writer gets a lot of writing done every year, and this leads to joy and self-confidence, something that no one can take away from you once you acquire it. So take steps to do so today, and you won't be sorry that you did.
