Specially Processed American Meat SPAM!

In 1937 Spam was introduced as a tasty meat product by the Hormel Meat Company as Specially Processed American Meat, it also was called Specially Processed Army Meat.. The clouds of war in Europe were on the distant horizon and the U.S military was looking to gear up for any eventualities.

One requirement the Army had was a light weight meat product that could be carried in the back pack in the field. Spam was their answer because it was in a light weight can and could easily be opened ( the first ones had a key that was inserted on a metal strip to open). Over 150 million pounds of Spam was sold to the military by the time the war ended in 1945.

In 1941 Pearl Harbor was attacked, drawing the United States into War World II. Hawaii soon became a staging for men and supplies for the U.S. military forces going West. Spam became a "foxhole" treat if not an necessity. Soldiers were sometimes in combat for days and resupply was difficult.

The saying "An army moves on it stomach" was very true in this case. Spam was indeed a great nutrition item. It also was served on troop ships as the U.S. Military engaged in island hopping in the Pacific. I suppose the "Dog Face" might have gotten a little weary of Spam. But it was a cheap and ready food source in a can.

Hawaii had been introduced to Spam as it had been the staging area for supplies and men heading West Not all of the Spam went West with the troops. The local Hawaiians fell in love with this delicious product (I may have some disagreement with that comment by some of you, including my wife). Even today if you see "Hawaiian Steak" on the menu, guess what it is?

Now whether you think Spam is a wonderful treat or maybe not so wonderful, the type of spam that is not wonderful is banned here at WA and rightfully so. What is spam in our internet world? The dictionary says "Unsolicited email, often of a commercial nature, sent indiscriminately to multiple mailing lists, individuals, or newsgroups; junk email".

I am writing this to aid our "newbies" and remind our "veterans" that marketing your product is not allowed at WA. As Kyle and Carson have said, we want to be a spam-free community. We all want our business and related income to grow that is for sure, but don't promote it on WA platform.

This is the best and friendliest internet community . Please keep it this way.

Thanks for the reminder Bill and Sue, it has such a history and we are fortunate to be able to engage on a spam free platform.

Hi Alex,
Thanks for the remarks. Yes we are blessed in having a wonderful learning and growing environment.

Good Morning Bill and Sue,

I like your Spam story with a message. When still a small girl living in Holland your Spam also found us. I remember I liked the taste at that time but nowadays would not touch it anymore. My personal health evolution has made me understand to avoid men made foods as much as possible. When you look at the labels one cannot even pronounce the words less understand what they mean.I now even have a website on these things. Now the other Spam is no good either. Moral of your story, let's stay completely Spam free, your mind and your stomach will thank you.

Greetings from the south of Spain, Taetske

HI Testske,
Thanks for your comments. You are right, neither spam is any good for you. I am not "spamming" Spam.

Bill

Good reminder. One thing I like about WA is it's spam free policy

Hi SK,
Thanks for your remarks. It is nice not to have promotions, you get way to much of that on TV.

SPAM as a food is okay occasionally, but your right I loathe internet spam. Shalom

Hi Mark,
Thanks for your comments. Have a great week.

Competitors Patrick Cudahy and Swift's Premium couldn't hold a candle to this "takeover"!

I ate a lot of Spam as a kid. We should avoid the spam on the internet.

Hi Pablo,
Thank you for your comment. I still think the food Spam is good (questionable health benefits) but the internet spam is most hated.
Bill & Sue

Isn't it something how Spam has changed?

It started out good as a meat product (still is as far as I am concerned) and turned into something very undesirable.
