The importance of traffic

I was browsing affiliate programs that might interest photographers. (affiliates+photo) and came across Shutterfly. They are the first affiliate program I have found that clearly tells me how much traffic my site must attract before they will approve my affiliate application. In there case a site must of 50,000 visitors a month.

Amazon and Asana won't tell me their traffic requirements. They just tell me my site doesn't qualify. It would be nice if like Shutterfly they would tell me their requirements so I know what to fix and when to try again. Anyone have any suggestions?

There are affiliate platforms like JVZoo and CJ that do not have a traffic requirement but they do have a minimum sales requirement so like Kyle says, get traffic before trying to monetize your website. There are a few exceptions. You can sell WA membership as soon as you sign up to WA. WA is a great product to promote and a great way to test what it takes to make sales. The optin list I use has an excellent affiliate program with no sales or traffic requirement.

Don't be in to big a hurry to monetize your website. First comes traffic. Good content draws traffic so concentrate on building out your website. Second comes building your list. Scatter tripwires throughout your website to encourage visitors to subscribe to your list. Build a relationship with your list and start selling to it. Last are affiliate programs.

In closing, let me add a small rant. Firstly, secondly and lastly are not words. KISS. Use first, second, third and definitely not lastly.

For those of you who are successfully using Amazon, Asana and other large affiliate platforms what traffic and other requirements did you have to meet to become an affiliate?

Thank you for a good blog post! I'm sure this will ring true with me once I start to monetize, but I'm not to that point yet. KISS is the best thing to go by and I make it a rule wherever I can.

Rakuten has no requirements either.

Thanks Mike, I had forgotten about Rakuten.

I didn't know Amazon had requirements. I signed up a couple of years ago. At the time, I was getting very little traffic. I get a check from them every month, so if they have requirements, I guess I must be meeting them.

Good to know. Maybe there is another reason they reject my sites, 3 sites submitted, 3 sites rejected. One site submitted twice.
