It depends on what you're trying to achieve.
If you need to add a verification code for say Google Analytics, you can add it to the All-in-One SEO plugin.
If you need to verify say Adsense, then I recommend you install the Header & Footer plugin https://wordpress.org/plugins/header-footer/ and insert the code into the Head Injection section.
Thanks your advice worked. Later I got far enough into the Bootcamp training and Kyle suggests going to editor, finding header in the right column and editing the header using editor.
I think your suggestion may be better. I'm worried that an upgrade might overwrite the edit if I am not using a child theme.
