Being Resourceful Rather than a Traffic Controller
I believe we all have a purpose in this life, especially an obligation to help our fellow humans. What are you? A resourceful person or you are like the traffic policeman who just stand there, and direct traffic without even trying to find out if people need more than direction. Any day, I would prefer a resourceful friend and Not those just recommend.
DisclaimerDon't get me wrong, I'm not saying that someone is wrong with just telling people where to go get help, but I think NOT trying to render any sought of advice initially before just pushing them to go ask the boss even though you have the answers is 100% wrong.
The worst part of it, is COPYING the same statement every time like a ROBOT is even more ridiculous because you sounds like that guy who just pass out handouts at the office all day every day.
My experience with asking the proWhen I first started WA, I tried to seek answer from the pro. This time was Kyle. Though he responded, but I needed to make a decision on name for my domain like yesterday which by the time I received his response, it was already late. Guess what, I already choose my current domain which was different from the suggestion he gave.
So, I learnt a lesson to ask the community even if I ask Kyle or another pro, especially if it's urgent because I know Kyle and others are very busy.
After some time, people will not even bother to ask for help from you. They will rather prefer to die with their problem than to be either ask to go "Google it" or "go to the Library of Congress " or "even go ask the pro."
True story, during my first year in medical school, I had a roommate that will always ask me to explain every single concept in biochemistry and other subjects to him. So, one day, I gave him my textbook and told him to go read about it there as soon as he ask for help.
Guess what, he didn't read a single page of it. When I asked him how come he didn't read it or even go to meet the professor. You know what he told me? " Benson, I know there are professors to go to, but I do understand it better whenever you explain to me, and beside, it will take me a longer time to grab the concept compared to asking you for help." I believed some of you might relate to it.
Basically, people are different. Since that day, if someone can remove pride, and humble her or himself to ask, I will provide what I know if I do and direct them if they need expert advice.
Have you ever go to your doctor, waste so much time and money, nothing was done by the doctor, only to be referred to another doctor, a specialist?
Don't you feel like requesting for refund or ask yourself that why don't I just be allow to go see the specialist directly?
In medical school, we were told by a professor Not to ever be like some doctors who just refer patients to specialists without trying to help, even if it's something so minute that they can easily diagnose and treat.
The rule of thumb is to Try helping the patient first except you know well that this is one of those life threatening or serious cases that is beyond your knowledge or scope of practice (expertise).
Just for your own information if you are a nurse. Doctors get piss out nurses who call them every time for minor things like blood pressure a little bit high, temperature in the high normal, except in rare situations without trying to use their clinical judgement.
Summary, don't be like that police above but be like this one below
Lastly, don't be like those doctors who are like traffic road controllers because anybody can do that and to me, there is no value or usefulness to people in most cases because they could just go direct to the source.
Guess what? You overwhelmed the system and devalue it.
I won't go to seek help to any doctor who always refer me to a specialist for minor bruises. Even my wife get mad at me when I say, can't you just google it.
Would you go to that guy who never try to help rather refer you to go look for the pro, which sometime could take you longer time to get your answer?
What if you need solution now?
Don't get mad at the message, but tell me what do you think? Be honest because they say the reason why evil triumphs is because the few good men stand and do nothing.
Stay bless and keep believing that this unprecedented period will soon be over.
