How to Detect AI-Generated Writing: Common Words and Phrases to Watch For

I am writing this article, because I myself don't know how to edit AI generated content to become human.

My process is that I discuss a topic with ChatGPT and then ask it to generate a blog post out of our conversation.

I read the content which most of the time I like and think it represents exactly what I want to say but in a more organized manner. Not to mention of course much faster.

Still, in many cases I get the comment that this content is not real and that it is generated by AI. I respect those comments, but I would be oblivious to the fact of what is wrong with it. I publish the content because I like it and it represents what I really wants to say.

Today, I decided to discuss the topic with ChatGPT, and asked it how I can use it in a way that is not detected. I liked the guidelines, therefore, again I asked it to write a blog post based on our conversation. Here is the result:

AI-generated content is everywhere, but it doesn’t always pass the human test. If you’ve ever read something that feels a little too mechanical, it might be because of overused words and predictable phrases. In this blog, we’ll reveal common signs of AI writing and share tips to make your content stand out with authenticity.

Transition Words That Feel Forced

AI often leans heavily on transition words like however, moreover, furthermore, and additionally to connect ideas. While these words are effective in moderation, overusing them can make content feel mechanical. For example:

"However, trading is not easy, and it requires discipline."

Instead, use more natural transitions like but, yet, or skip the transition altogether. A conversational rewrite might look like:

"Trading isn’t easy. It demands discipline, no matter what."

Filler Phrases That Add Nothing

Phrases like it’s important to note that, at the end of the day, and needless to say serve little purpose other than padding content. While they may seem harmless, they can dilute your message. For instance:

"It’s important to note that the market is unpredictable."

This can be simplified to:

"The market is unpredictable."

Being direct strengthens your point and keeps readers engaged.

Overuse of Adverbs

Adverbs like very, truly, essentially, clearly, and significantly are often overused in AI-generated content. Unfortunately, this weakens the impact. For example:

"Risk management is very important for consistent trading."

A stronger alternative is:

"Risk management is critical for consistent trading."

Using precise and descriptive words often does the job more effectively.

Generic Nouns That Lack Specificity

AI content tends to over-rely on generic nouns like success, challenges, opportunities, results, and benefits. While these words convey broad ideas, they often lack the personal touch readers crave. For example:

"Success in trading requires discipline and patience."

Instead, add specificity:

"Achieving consistent profits in trading demands discipline and patience."

Being precise about what you mean helps build trust and relatability.

Predictable Sentence Structures

Another giveaway of AI content is repetitive sentence patterns, such as:

"First, I check the news. Then, I mark key levels. Finally, I plan my trades."

Mixing up sentence lengths and structures can make your writing more dynamic. For instance:

"Every morning, I check the news for potential market movers. Some days, the charts reveal opportunities instantly. Other days, it takes time and patience."

Clichés That Feel Tired

Clichés like think outside the box, a win-win situation, and it’s a game-changer are frequently spotted in AI content. They fail to resonate with readers. Instead of writing:

"At the end of the day, trading is about strategy,"

try something more original:

"When the trading day closes, it’s clear—success depends on having a solid strategy."

Unique phrasing and personal insights are far more impactful.

Tips to Avoid AI-Sounding Content

The key to avoiding AI-sounding content is to infuse it with personality, specificity, and natural language. Here’s how:

  1. Edit Out Repetition: Avoid using the same transition words, adverbs, or generic phrases repeatedly.
  2. Add Personal Insights: Share anecdotes or specific examples to make your writing relatable.
  3. Focus on Authenticity: Use conversational language and break away from predictable patterns.
  4. Vary Sentence Structure: Mix short and long sentences to keep readers engaged.
  5. Proofread for Filler Words: Eliminate unnecessary phrases that don’t add value.

Final Thoughts

AI writing tools can be a great starting point, but creating authentic content requires a human touch. By avoiding overused words, predictable phrases, and clichés, you can ensure your writing feels natural and engaging. Remember, the best content connects with readers on a personal level. Make it clear, make it unique, and most importantly, make it yours.

I am publishing this blog for two main reasons; getting more tips from more experienced readers who are using ChatGPT much better than I am. Helping others who are facing the same challenges.

I have read from others that they have a list of words that they ask AI not use any of the words mentioned in that list. Personally, I don't have such a list, and I don't know if this is technique is helpful.

Sound advice and info here my friend....

AI is here to stay, but.... we always need to differentiate ourselves from the masses!!!

Thank you very much for your comment, and a very good note of balance.

Yes, while using AI generated content we need to keep the originality of being differentiated. Very important point.

Most welcome my friend! :-)

Thanks for highlighting this. I too have started to use AI in my writing but I always read it through, change and edit things to my way of thinking. I also find that writing my own structure helps and using AI to add paragraphs rather than an entire blog is useful.

Words that I find come up a lot are "fosters" or fostering" so I try to avoid those. I also think that the structure of AI writing can usually be spotted a mile off. It uses headings followed by colons and then a short paragraph. This is a big give-away to me so I always try to vary the structure too.

Thanks for your insights here... AI generated or not! We need to remember that behind every AI generation is a human generated prompt.

Thank you very much Gail, question: Do you ask AI to avoid using words or do you do it manually?

I haven't asked it to avoid using words as yet, but I may start. I usually tell it what I do want though and I'm quite specific about audiences. I think that you really just have to know how your own writing would sound and remember that when you edit something. AI throws up phrases and sentences that I would never use, so I always change those. I can't deny it though, AI has made my life a lot easier and it's always quicker to get started using AI, even if you change a lot!

Thanks a lot, that was very helpful

Hi Rami!

Andre shared this a while back, and I still find it useful. Check it out.

Thanks a lot.. Will definately take a look at it.

Today I was able to read the article you sent me.. It was very helpful.. thanx..

I saw here on WA that some members have a list of words that they ask AI NOT to use.. I failed to save such lists..

I am not sure if this strategy is useful and if you or anyone in the community can refer to such word lists that we would ask AI not to use.

Hi Rami!

If you Google search "words that AI uses a lot" you will find some lists that may be helpful if you want to focus on that.

When I use AI to write content, I let it do its thing and correct what I don't feel sounds like me.

Thank you. This is a very good article. I use AI extensively but I always take time to edit and proofread. You give great ideas on how to structure an article with a personal perspective.

This is a personal challenge for me and thought since I am trying to find a solution for this to publish what i am arriving at if there is a chance that others with the same challenge can benefit or some experts would shed some more light or solutions on the topic.
