Struggling with Rankings? Here's What I've Learned After Years in Affiliate Marketing

If you’ve ever poured hours into your site, writing, tweaking, optimizing, only to watch your rankings slip or stall, I get it. It’s frustrating. And it’s easy to feel like you’re doing something wrong.

But here’s the truth: the ups and downs of affiliate marketing you face are normal. Search engines evolve. Competition grows. And sometimes, even great content takes time to be seen.

After years in this space, I’ve learned that recovery isn’t about shortcuts.

It’s about refining your strategy, staying consistent, and leaning into what works.

Here are some practical tips that have helped me (and others) regain momentum, reconnect with our audience, and keep moving forward.

Just know this:

You’re not failing—you’re refining.

Why Rankings Stall

Even seasoned marketers hit plateaus. Here are a few common reasons:

  • Algorithm updates: Google’s changes can shift rankings overnight
  • Increased competition: More creators = more noise
  • Outdated content: Posts from years ago may no longer match search intent
  • Thin internal linking: Pages that don’t connect well can feel isolated
  • Low engagement signals: Few comments, shares, or time-on-page can hurt visibility

What You Can Do to Recover

Here are some strategies that have helped me and others bounce back:

Refresh Old Posts

Note that I am referring to old content, which is at least 6 months or older, that has not improved in search engine rankings and/or on social media.

  • Update headlines, images, and formatting
  • Add new insights or examples
  • Add infographs where or when needed
  • Get your posts reindexed with GSC and also Bing Webmaster tools
  • Re-check keyword relevance and search intent for your readers

Special note with search engines:

Don't just rely on Google as advised by Jay in one of his recent classes link is below.

https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/classes/series/mastering-the-basics-of-platform-seo/seo-for-search-engines?autoplay=1

Strengthen Internal Linking

  • Connect related posts with descriptive anchor text
  • Create content loops that guide readers deeper into your site
  • Create pillar posts and links to other posts related to the same topic and vice versa

AI-Powered

  • Focus on specific, lower-competition phrases
  • Example: “WA training for beginners in 2025” vs. “Wealthy Affiliate review”

Use the New Jaaxy AI-Powered research to refine your long-tail keywords.

Improve Page Speed & Mobile UX

  • Compress images: there are many tools you can use personally,, I use Converter for Media on my sites, which brings them down to Webp format. Also, the free version is just fine no need to upgrade there.
  • Reduce plugin bloat
  • Test your site on mobile devices

Engage Your Audience

  • Ask questions at the end of posts like creating an FAQ
  • Encourage comments and feedback
  • Respond back to any comments and be active.
  • Share your posts in niche forums or social media groups. Please make sure they are niche-related as well.

Mindset Matters

Affiliate marketing isn’t just about traffic; it’s about trust, consistency, and long-term growth.

It’s easy to compare yourself to others, especially when you see big earnings or flashy dashboards.

But every site has its own journey, along with every person has their own specific pathway online

“Success doesn’t come to you. You go to it.”

Quote by Marva Collins

Stay focused on your niche, your audience, and your voice.

Be honest and truthful and rankings will follow.

Community Support

One of the best things about Wealthy Affiliate is the community.

If you’re struggling, speak up. Share your experience. Ask for feedback. You’ll be surprised how many others are in the same boat, and how willing they are to help.

Final Thoughts

If your rankings have dipped, don’t panic. Don’t quit. And definitely don’t assume you’re doing everything wrong.

You’re learning, adapting, and refining, and that’s what real growth looks like.

You may fall down, but if you want success, then get back up and keep pushing forward.

Let’s keep supporting each other, sharing what works, and building businesses that last.

Have you faced a ranking slump? What helped you recover?

As Always

Thank you, Apach1, for this incredibly insightful and timely post. Your words resonated with me on many levels. As a creator in the wellness space, I often feel that tension between crafting authentic content and navigating the unpredictable waves of visibility.
Your line — “You’re not failing—you’re refining” — really struck a chord. It reframes those moments of doubt when we feel like we’ve done everything “right” but the results just don’t show up yet.
I especially appreciated your tips on refreshing older content and strengthening internal linking. In my case, revisiting articles around natural rituals and connecting them to core themes like “Inner Fire” or “Conscious Beauty” has clearly improved engagement.
And you’re absolutely right: mindset is everything. Staying grounded in our niche, our voice, and our community is what helps us move through the dips without losing momentum.
Thanks again for this strategic and human compass. I’ll be keeping this post close as I refine my next optimizations.

Great tips on ranking Andre

It is super easy to feel like just giving up, and this is especially true the first year. Sometimes all it takes is to make a change to your website post title. Make it more engaging by adding power words or emotional works. I have changed a few of my post titles, and now they are ranking much higher.

Experiement with posts not doing so well,

Jeff

You are welcome Jeff and yes probably one of the easiest tasks in life is to quit, trouble is, at what cost?

As you stated it can be just a simple fix to a post title or re-doing the wording to our post. Like we do now days to focus on search intent rather than just stuffing keywords and hoping it will all be sorted out.

I too am in the process of experimenting with some posts in order to get some ranked back on page 1 where they used to be before Goofball changes things around.

Always a work in progress as are our website

Enjoy your day and week ahead.

Hello Andre

I was wondering about how many times RankMath suggests adding our keyword in our content. It seems to be quite a lot to me, I had to go back to my posts to add the keyword more times.

Do you think RankMath is correct about this?
Jeff

I feel they go overboard at times
I just add it in the title
Introduction paragraph and once more as a H2 the rest is just natural writing

Thank you Andre

I appreciate hearing from you on using the keyword in content

Jeff

Most welcome Jeff the main part is giving search intent with the keyword used

Thank you Andre

I appreciate you sharing with me on ranking content. I hope you get some of your content back on the first page of search engines again.

Thanks and surprised a Kiwi would agree with an Aussie but it does happen once in a blue moon. haha

Yes mostly Big Goofball as I call it created some heaps of hassles for many at all levels from newbies to advanced marketers.

Enjoy your morning hours at the moment and as usual Kiwis can't spell either

Regard Andre

But because you are my neighbour will forgive you for the name. Will head off soon as well.

So true about the emphasis on trust and consistence.. It's tempting to chase quick wins, but building a solid foundation is what really matters in the long run. Thanks for the reminder!

Your welcome Merelina and yes taking the temptation for the quick winds might sound good but in the end, especially online they will cost you more than one may realise.
Always best to take the steps one as a time and build that solid foundation WA teaches us and keep moving forward.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

Andre :)
