Anzac Day 2025: In Gratitude and Remembrance
Today, 25th April 2025, we pause to reflect on Anzac Day, a day that carries deep significance for Australians and New Zealanders. It’s a solemn yet proud occasion where we honor the memory of those who served and sacrificed for our freedom.
Anzac Day commemorates the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, who bravely landed at Gallipoli, Turkey, in 1915. Facing unimaginable opposition, approximately 16,000 soldiers took part in the campaign that became etched into history. Tragically, on that first night, over 2,000 men lost their lives. Yet, the bravery and determination of the Anzacs remain an enduring symbol of courage in the face of adversity.
The Dawn Service: A Tradition of Reflection
Since 1916, Australians have risen early to gather for Dawn Services across the country. In Sydney NSW, the Cenotaph at Martin Place becomes a focal point for reflection at 4:20 am, followed by a vibrant march through the streets at 9:00 am, where thousands line the roads to honor fallen heroes and their families.
Each state observes this tradition in its own unique way, with time zones shaping when communities come together. But regardless of the location, the shared spirit of gratitude and remembrance is unwavering.
The Unsung Heroes: Beyond the Battlefield
Anzac Day also reminds us to recognize the contributions of unsung heroes, those whose dedication and sacrifice often go unnoticed. Nurses and doctors, like the Australian nurses aboard hospital ships near Anzac Cove, worked tirelessly to treat the wounded. Their courage saved countless lives during a harrowing time, becoming a vital part of our shared history.
From the trenches to the medical tents, and from the battlefields to the hospital wards, the sacrifices of these individuals are inseparable from the story of Anzac Day.
The Legacy Lives On: The Ode
Today, as we reflect on the sacrifices of those who have fallen and the enduring legacy of the Anzacs, let us carry forward their values of bravery, unity, and determination. Their actions paved the way for the freedom we enjoy today, a freedom that must never be taken for granted.
Finally, the last ode to all who gave their lives to protect us then and today.
Lest We Forget
As we bow our heads and lay wreaths at memorials, let us remember the enduring significance of Anzac Day. It is not just a day of remembrance but a reminder of the resilience, courage, and love for country that defines us.

Thank you for sharing this powerful reflection, Andre. You captured the spirit of Anzac Day beautifully. It is humbling to think of the courage, sacrifice, and unity shown by so many, not just on the front lines but also behind them, the unsung heroes who stood just as bravely in their own way.
The traditions, the dawn services, and the remembrance through generations truly show how deep that legacy runs. It is a reminder that freedom is never free and must always be honored with gratitude and reflection.
Lest We Forget.
