Customizing Your Website Wordpress Theme So it Looks Like the "Picture"

If you are anything like me, I struggled the first week of building my website because I didn't quite understand why my website did not look like the theme. When I would choose the theme it was perfect in every way...but my website was the equivalent of kindergarten scribbles next to the Mona Lisa.

After large amounts of frustration and some trial and error...I realized I needed some step by step directions! To my surprise I found that each (well designed) theme comes with step by step directions to make it look like the "picture".

Once you install your theme, the first thing you need to before you customize is print out the documentation. The documentation for each theme will show you how to customize.

After you learn the limitations of your theme, you can expand its capabilities by installing plugins. There is literally a plug-in for everything! Anything that you would like for your website to do, somebody has already thought of it and created you a plug-in. A word of caution though, don't get carried away! Too many plug-ins can slow the loading of your site down.

To start customizing your WordPress theme, first go to Appearance -> Themes page.. On this page, locate the active theme and click on the Customize button next to its title. The next screen will take you to a page that you can use to modify your WordPress theme in real time. When you get to this point, FIND THE DOCUMENATION~

Thank you! :-)

Good point Anita .. I struggled with this for a loooooong time! Cheers, William.

And if you get stuck on a particular point, don't forget that (many?/most?/all?) wordpress themes have a support forum where you can ask questions (or perhaps find that someone has already posted an answer to your question).

From a theme's home page, look in the right column for a button labeled "View Support Forum".

Thanks for this information to make themes become relevant!

Thank you for that information, Anita. I'm here as of March, and I never noticed this.
