When AI Stops Being Just A Tool

A Real Life AI Story.

Recently, my Mum, who works as a checkout operator, told me something a customer shared with her that really stayed with me.

A customer discovered that a close friend had taken his wife's photo and used it to create a deepfake.

The disturbing part?

He recognized it.

Not because the technology was already terrible. but because he knew his wife well enough to know that something wasn't right.

The Bigger AI Problem.

And that's the part of the AI conversation we don't talk about enough.

AI can generate faces, voices, and images that look convincing to strangers. But behind every image is still a real person whose identity, privacy, and dignity can be affected.

And this isn't limited to people that we know personally.

Recently, content creator Muskan Karia spoke publicly about being targeted by a deepfake, while actor Shalini Pandey addressed an AI-generated video falsely depicting her and urged people to not share or engage with it.

Just Because We Can...

This is where I think we need to draw a very clear line:

AI literacy isn't just knowing how to generate something.

It's knowing when you shouldn't.

It's understanding consent.

It's recognizing that that someone's photograph isn't automatically yours to manipulate,

And it's remembering that just because technology can create something doesn't mean we have the right to create it.

AI Needs Human Judgement.

AI should expand human creativity.

It shouldn't give people new ways to violate someone's identity.

The technology isn't the only thing getting smarter. Our judgement needs to catch up too.
