What Is Digital Nomadism?

Is it a myth? Or you can really become a nomad and work remotely?

There's a lot of misinformation and confusion about what being a digital nomad means, which either makes people think that it is just a myth to become a nomad, and then they don't try or take action.

Or they might believe that it is so easy to become a digital nomad, and when they start taking action and don't see results, they give up early.

I have written this article in order to let whoever is asking this question the honest truth about what Nomadism is, and whether it was really achievable or not.

What Is Digital Nomadism?

Digital Nomadism is the ability to use the digital and technological tools in your favor in order to start making a living from anywhere you want, instead of tying yourself to an office or cubicle.

Simply, the ability to work from anywhere you want and make a full time income.

And now for the most important question:

Can You Become a Digital Nomad or Is it Just a Myth?

Yes, you can become a digital nomad. This is not a myth at all.

Then Why Do People Think Otherwise? (2 Main Reasons)

People might think that Digital Nomadism is a myth for many reasons, here are some of them:

1 - Scammers with Their "Become a Nomad Overnight" Courses

Many remote working "gurus" create and sell courses (sometimes for thousands of dollars) convincing their victims that they can become millionaires overnight, ditch everything and travel to a tropical country, by an island and a yacht and never work again, or work few minutes a day.

Unfortunately, this is not true, or everyone would do it.

Making enough money to leave your job and travel to another country is not as easy and quick as these "gurus" make it look.

These people give such claims and promises in order to entice people to join their expensive programs looking for the magical push button that would make them rich overnight.

And when these victims face the ugly truth of these promises and realize that they can't get rich overnight, they think that Digital Nomadism is just a myth, and give up on their dreams too soon.

I was on the verge of getting scammed with some of these programs, but I was lucky to find a person who recommended that I join this great platform, Wealthy Affiliate, in order to learn the truth about making money remotely and starting with the right mindset.

Some people think that a nomad is the one who goes to Bali and work from there, some think that a nomad is someone who works from a coffee shop, some think that a nomad is some who lives at the countryside and works online.

Some think that you have to start your own business to become a nomad, and something that you need to work for a company that allows you to work remotely.

And the truth is that there are many forms and levels of being a digital nomad.

You can become a nomad while working for a company, or you can become a nomad working on your own business (like what we learn here at Wealthy Affiliate).

You choose which is better for you.

Maybe working remotely for a company can grant you a stable income and less stress, buy you are still an employee, and then only way to increase your income is to work more hours and wait for the next pay rise.

And you can be a nomad who works from home, from a coffee shop, a co-work space, from a different country, or from a mix of all of these options, like I personally do.

Being a nomad means that YOU have the choice to decide the place you want to work from, and the hours of the day you work.

It doesn't mean that you have to stick to one place.

I work from a different place every few days because that's how I maintain the desire and the energy I need to build my business.

You don't have to travel to another country in order to be a digital nomad, that's just an option.

And you don't have to work from home, that's just another option.

You decide where to work from.

Do I Consider Myself to Be a Nomad?

It's been almost three years since I started making money online, and now I make all of my income online through the different websites I have started thanks to what I learned here at WA.

It took me around a year and a half before relying completely on my online business for making a living, but I did it finally.

Some people make it in a shorter period of time, some in a longer period of time, and some people never do it.

It depends on everyone's consistency and on how fast they learn from their mistakes and move on, which must happen.

So, the answer is yes, I'm a digital nomad now.

I still live in my home country, Jordan, but I have the flexibility to work from any place I want, to go to on vacation and take short breaks at any day I want without asking for a permission. I'm my own boss.

Can You Become a Nomad?

The opportunity is out there, you need to catch it.

There has never been a time when it was more possible than now.

Lots of businesses are changing the way they operate and lots of people are losing their traditional jobs in favor of both: machines that are doing a more efficient job for a lower cost, and people who are willing to work remotely as employees, freelancers, or small business owners.

You can become a nomad if you understand that you need to work for it, and that it won't happen overnight.

Where to Start from?

You need to decide on a way for making money remotely.

Of course, you can do freelance jobs for businesses, but this is unscalable, and it comes with a lot of pressure.

But starting an online business can be more scalable than handling freelancing jobs.
