Should I quit? Is this the life I want?

I have not been blogging here but recently I've started coming back reading all the wonderful blog posts by the community. Unfortunately, I haven't spent much time going through the trainings here although few months back, I made a promise to myself that I will start to devote more time to learn and build my business.

In the last few months, I have gone through not so good times at work. The pressure at work was immense, constantly answering to my bosses and staff, not to mention the issues coming up in my work due to some audit / compliance reviews. There are tons of things to do, and so little time at work. It came to a point where it was getting so bad that I went to a doctor. Guess what? The doc wanted to diagnose me with hypertension. At that moment, it really made me think. Is this where I want to end up with or is this how I want to live my life? Dependant on medication to control my blood pressure?

I made a commitment to myself at that time that I am not going to be stuck with medication for life! It is really not worth it and it is like trading my life for my workplace. I recalled a piece of advice my ex boss used to tell me - no one is indispensable. Everyo

ne is easily replaced. So, at the end of the day, your health and life is more important. Since then, I started taking Moringa powder, exploring chinese medication, just looking for a way to bring my blood pressure down. My direct reports were quite supportive, one brought a blood pressure monitor to work to get me to check my blood pressure, remind me to rest or relax when my eyes turn red (if you get what I mean).
All this health scare leads me to this question. Is it time to quit and leave the corporate life - a life that I've known for the last 16 years. So I started planning for my resignation, there's this pressure of ensuring you have a JOB before you resign. That's what everyone would say, you need the stability, the money to pay for bills... but what is the point of having lots of money, but feeling sick all the time? I had a discussion with my mum.. telling her that I plan to resign and surprisingly she supported my decision. Reminding me that I can always get a job that is less stressful and with lower pay, it doesn't matter. Just don't stress myself.

So, this is my plan -

  • Be diligent in going through the training in WA
  • Work on my website (would need a lot of help and advice from our wonderful WA community)
  • Hand in my resignation in Aug
  • Serve 2 months notice and leave by Oct
  • Go for a short 3 weeks holiday
  • Continue working and improving my site

What do you think? Is this risky?

Think that you have the right timescale, but do be frugal until you leave, to enable you to live while your money plans at WA come together.
Wishing you great success.
Stuart

Thanks Stuart for your advice

You are more than welcome.

Your health and family are always number 1. I would just recommend that you save enough to cover your bills for a few months if possible.

Thanks Eddy, yes, that’s what I plan to do..

Your plan is ambitious...

Always be diligent.

Always be working on your site - the WA community will be there to help you along the way.

Be careful handing in your notice before you're ready. Many companies will say thank you and then say don't worry about staying the 2 months, you can go now. If you're not prepared for that, don't do it.

When you go on holiday, make sure you're still contributing to your site either by doing it while on vacation or by creating the posts prior to vacation and scheduling them for posting during it. Taking a break can hurt your traffic.

Always work on improving your sites.

I like your commitment.

Thanks Merlyn. Yes agreed that I need to continue working on my site even while on holiday. Trying to learn as much as I can now.

Cutting the stress and working on holistic wellness can be so beneficial. They have even working on studies about the effects of meditation and mindfulness-based stress reduction on reducing blood pressure. It's pretty cool stuff.

A decade ago, I dropped out of the corporate life to work jobs that were less stressful and I never looked back. There was a lifestyle change in learning to be happy on a lower income but I've never looked back.

I would seriously rather work fast food than go back to being full time in corporate america. I like my current 15-20 hour a week job but when I'm having a bad day, I remind myself that I could quit tomorrow and find a similar paying position easily. Knowing that makes it much easier not to sweat the small stuff.

Totally agree with you! That's what I have been telling myself and my family. Just surprised this time its easier and faster for them to accept my decision to quit corporate life

I think you should follow your plan. Giving this as much attention as possible is the best thing you can do to build your online business.

I was working on my website slowly but surely, but that changed recently after my job situation last week. So, I have realized that I need commit more time here as well.

I wish you the best!

Bob

Thanks Bob, I believe in WA and the community we have here. Definitely, we will all achieve success, like what you said, need to commit more time here.

All the best to you too!
Alston

Not just here, but mostly your website...that’s what I really meant.
