About Mistswitch
Joined August 2018
I'm in my late 30's and my only human child recently graduated high school. It feels a little weird to be done with that phase of my life as she gets ready to start college. I'm here hoping to learn how to create a sustainable online income that will allow me to use my new freedom to do some traveling while I am still young enough to enjoy it.

Before August 2018, my experience earning online had been mostly very small things - transcription, mturk, and content creation. The content creation started with ghost writing for BlogMutt clients and has expanded a bit to include a few freelance clients for articles and custom erotica. I have also earned small amounts with amazon affiliates in the past but have not yet grown anything large.

As of January 2019, I am still working part-time in a retirement community. I also have freelance clients and sometimes write for BlogMutt/Verblio clients. I'm participating in A Round of Words in 80 Days writing challenge this year and I included my niche site writing into my writing goals. The challenge helps keep me accountable, which I really like.

I'm comfortable with content creation once I have keywords and a post goal in front of me. I'm okay with WordPress on hosting like BlueHost so the Weathly Affiliate hosted version is even easier to use. My problem areas are things like attracting visitors, having realistic site goals, and finding the motivation to stick to the plan. Those are the parts that make it a business and not just a personal blog. I decided to try Wealthy Affiliate because I wanted clear step by step instructions to follow, not only in building the site but also scaling up to something that can function as an actual business.

Thanks for connecting with me, Mistswitch.
Interesting profile and one thing that caught my eye was your mention of custom erotica. I've started to write erotic fiction short stories and was wondering whether to use Wealthy Affiliate as a means by which to publish them on a blog as a niche. Are you publishing / selling your articles via Wealthy Affiliate? I was unsure whether or not it would be permitted to use a Wealthy Affiliate blog in such a way and have never asked Kyle! Perhaps you can offer some advice?
Cheers

I am not using WA to publish or sell them. They have been direct sales to people who approached me after seeing some of my work posted on a free site. If you were publishing on amazon, I think you could probably create an author site as long as nothing explicit was posted on the site directly.

That's great, thanks. Amazon was somewhere I was thinking of publishing but I hadn't thought about posting on free sites.
Wishing you the best of luck with it.

Hello. I just saw you in Live Chat and saw the picture of you and your dog and thought I'd come and say hi. I am following you now.

(The dog in my profile picture died eight weeks ago and we now have a new Labrador puppy,)
Best wishes,

I'm sorry to hear about your dog. It's so hard to let them go. My old guy is 12-years-old and I'm dreading that time. The little on in my pic is only 2-years-old. Best of wishes with your new puppy and I hope things on WA go well for you!

Mistswitch , strange handle but I guess you know why you choose it. Just like I know why I choose Sruffey. If you read my WA blog you will know why I have to make Sruffey my Brand. Unlike you I have trouble with writing, I guess I need to take some online writing courses to help me. I have yet to make any money here at WA, but my motto is "don't ever give up and never surrender". I like your profile, the custom erotica intrieve me, I can't spell either. I am a hillbilly from Western North Carolina and I am 63, never went to college until I was 56, so that is why I have trouble with writing. I repaired and painted cars for 39 years, I lost my wife of 39 years 5 years ago, what I hate the most that she never lived to see me receive my degree. She dies in March and I received my degree in July. I don't know why I wanted you to know this, but it is the way my mind works, when something pops into it it comes out in words. Please as always like my comments, gthanks Sruffey.

The custom erotica pays surprisingly well for something that is so easy for me to write. Those clients tend to find me on a site where I post free erotica short stories. They like the way I do a specific sub-genre and want specific things. I was really surprised when the first person made me an offer but it was too good to refuse. I've toyed with the idea with self-publishing on amazon but I'm not there quite yet.

I've always been a writer but I used to focus on fiction. I got better at web content by pretty much just doing it. I was in a period of my life when I seriously needed the extra cash so I just threw myself in as a content writer on sites. Then I listened to feedback. It doesn't take classes. Just do it. And don't worry about spelling or even grammar in the first draft. There are programs and web apps that can fix it like site content here.

As far as making money here at WA, I haven't made anything from WA referrals either. My niche site though has gotten a few sales. It's not enough to pay for WA membership or even hosting somewhere cheaper but it's a start. Just keep creating content and you'll get there.

I had a dream a while back, that I think would make a great short story series or maybe even a TV series. The Name of it is Time Pickers, if you have ever watched American Pickers on cable, I think it is on History Channel. I will send you a private message and tell you about my dream and maybe you will be interested in helping me develop it into a screenplay or something. Dreams are a powerful force in every great writer's stories I think, Steven King is a good example. let me know what you think. Thanks Sruffey

Funny, one thing you said in your bio, it is sticking to the plan, and staying motivated.

There is nothing more important than pursuing this business than
to stick to the plan no matter what!
Much success, and hope to connect again soon.

Have followed you back.
Hope you like the retirement community.
I live in a retirement village in Australia.

All I am currently trying to do is to get my Amazon Associate approval back. Then I will be able to see where I am going.
I took it down myself about 6 months ago when I decided not to do this anymore.

All the best for the future

Hi there Mistswitch,
What an interesting name! May I ask what it means? In any case, you've accomplished great things in your bio. I see you're a dog lover. My wife and I are as well with our Shih tzu of 13 years. You done very well in the WA community. Yes, my great question is how to regularly attract visitors and get them to commit to action. I'm just a newbie plowing through the OEC coursework right now.
All the best to you,
Brian :)

Hi Ginger.

Gut-wrenching days are their first day at nursery school, and their first night away at college. But these are milestones past which many parents must sojourn. My advice? Look forward to that proud graduation day. :=))

It sounds like you're doing very well; you've got clients and you're freelancing. I'm just starting out as a proofreader. I am a content provider for low-paying mills like Textwriter, which is why I wan't to create my own client base, but at the same time I'm a contractor software engineer so it does get fraught at times. Lol.

Anyway, I'm following you and I look forward to watching your progress.

I'm under the impression that there's a lot of work out there for the competent content writer, therefore I'm curious as to why you need visitors to your website?

"Rachel Presser" is someone who offers good advice, I think, and you could try Googling this, which is a PDF:
'How to Earn a Living as a Content Writer' "Rachel Presser"

Best of luck,

Tayo

There is work available for good content writers. Many of the content jobs, as you have discovered, do not pay well. Bidding on sites is often undercut by people who can afford to write for less than I'm willing to accept. There is also competition for the jobs that pay very well. Content writing for others also has the pressure of deadlines and sometimes short timelines.

Affiliate sales commissions just kinda happen. You have to create content for your own site and market the site to get visitors but there aren't strict deadlines. The income potential isn't as fast as freelancing but it is more flexible. I want that flexibility. I'm working on building visitors to get affiliate income. I also want to eventually work on

I have some health issues (caused by a genetic disorder) that pressed me to add online work so I could reduce in person hours. That helps but there's going to be a point when even strict deadlines are problematic unless they're pretty far out time wise so I can plan carefully. The progression of my mom and other close relatives puts my timeline somewhere like 2-3 years before my first major surgery that will likely land me on partial disability and maybe a decade if i'm lucky before full disability. I'm trying to avoid that with the online income angle.

Oh dear! I'm sorry to hear about your health issues. I do hope that somehow, you overcome them. "Health is first and greatest wealth".

Wow, thank you for explaining about the difference between content writing and affiliate sales. Somehow, I'd forgotten its passive-earnings aspect and potential. By the way, could you perhaps try self-publishing? I've just started on a humorous (I hope!) slender book which, by-and-by, I'd like to publish as an e-book. However, I have way too many irons in the fire just now. Lol. Typical Gemini. (eye roll)

Self-publishing is on my list of things to try. I'm working on increasing my fiction writing now. Some of my freelance work is custom erotica scenes but those are just scenes. I need to work a bit more to get to publishable length books and everything I have read about it so far suggests that the best way to succeed is to be able to publish frequently.

I think I can do that but it's going to take some building up. Right now, I'm managing 4500-8500 words a week, counting both fiction and non-fiction, and have been since November. My goal is a gradual increase so I can do in the 8500-10000 words per week range consistently.

I have been looking at the Amazon FBA program too because it looks like I could package and ship when I feel well. I have also been looking at things like online coaching. For coaching, you have to touch base with clients regularly but I don't think that would require the same focus as writing. My goal eventually is to have multiple options. I don't want to depend on any one thing.

Thanks! You hit it right on the nose. The niche site I'm working on is dog related, specifically dogs on the small to smallish-medium size spectrum - toys, traveling with them, specific small breed concerns, etc.
