How Long is Too Long When Creating Content?

I find myself writing longer and longer articles to a point where it is too long. I strive to be as thorough as I can and include as much information I can that I think is relevant to making a good decision. Recently, when writing an article I ended up with a piece that was about 5000 words long. I have found that after I start doing research I find more and more relevant facts that I want to include. I know I am going down a "rabbit-hole" in a never-ending cycle and need to stay more focused.

In this case, I ended up breaking it down into three separate posts and eliminated information that seemed superfluous.

How long is too long?

As a result, I have fewer posts/articles than I perhaps should at this point, but each one is very informative, helpful, and thorough. Hopefully, others feel the same way.

I am certain I will get responses from some that say "1,000 words are enough", "people have limited attention spans", or "too many words will turn people off to the content". How do you eliminate details that are important?

I am certain I am not alone in this and others have likely gone through the same thing. I have also heard recently regarding Google ranking is that it's not the number of posts you have, but the number of quality posts.

Best regards, Alex

Hi - Google loves long content, it shows that you are an authority on your subject. From a reader's point of view, you should have a Table of Contents so that they can see the immediate points of interest and jump straight to them if they don't wish to read the whole post.

I read about ones that are 10,000 or more words! I think you did the right thing by breaking it up. Google likes consistency, and if you did that regularly, you would have to continually do it. There will be many good answers here soon, Alex!

Yeah! I knew there would be many opinions on the subject as there usually are with this group. A Good thing!

2

Yes, indeed. It will be helpful in your decision-making. You can also hit the magnifying glass and type in some keywords because I recall several posts have been written here concerning the subject.

What type of keywords should I use? Do you mean hashtags that I should use? I thought of this blog as creating a discussion rather than searching for keywords. What do you think?

2

No Just type in words in the question bar like: How many words are too many for a blog post, etc.

Here is an example, Alex!
