Not Enough Hours In The Day Make A List

Time can be our friend, that feeling we get when we achieve what we want to get done can be hard to beat. On the flip side, that feeling we get when we don't achieve what we set out to do can be overwhelming.

When we come to the online world most of us already have busy lives and internet marketing is just something that we have to fit into already busy schedules. When that learning and implementation curve becomes particularly steep it can be a struggle.

You may know that feeling, just before you get to that yes this will work........ I can do this moment........... just when you have one too many tasks on the go. That time when it can go good or in the next breath go bad.

That realization sets in that you may just be time poor. Too many tasks and not enough hours in the day. From experience, you can only keep a level of high intensity going for a short burst, it is not sustainable.

Well, a focused intensity that is.

Just at that point in time myself, a couple of projects taking more resources and time to get them to where they should be. It is at this point frustration can set in, you are furiously digging that hole and just happen to break the shovel handle at the bottom, on the very same day you forgot to take a ladder with you. It is times like this, that you need a plan to move things forward.

A list to the rescue

Make a list easy peasy. The good thing about a list is putting a line through the completed tasks, it brings a sense of order and achievement. I have been under a bit of pressure and this has worked for me.

Just thought that I would share, one of my nieces is one of those super organized ladies, I am sure folks duck for cover when they see her coming. Lists are her favorite thing, one of her tricks is that she actually puts tasks on the list that she has already done, which sounds counterproductive, but it actually works, kind of gives you that little pep up.

I have tried it to good effect, it helps build some momentum. what has really worked for me is that each day I try and do one big thing. If we are thinking in terms of our online businesses, then just one thing, it can be anything that helps build the bigger picture.

Then I try and do three what I call builder tasks, ones that are working toward the big task. They are more like component tasks, a little building block.

Then I try and do five mini tasks, which in turn leads into the medium tasks. It is a mindset thing it is quite empowering because it gives that sense of achievement, without that sense of paralysis, that can set in when there is just too much happening all at once.

In a way, it is about building infrastructure and developing systems that help us to achieve the goals that we have set.

This kind of list is systematic which in turn stops things from becoming problematic. We can become so busy being busy, that we are not really making progress. Every little thing that you are doing becomes part of the whole, it works a treat.

Real keen to hear how folks tackle the issue of getting things done in a timely fashion.
Many thanks
Alex Evans.

I started with a weekly timetable allowing for the days I knew would be long and hard and make working on my business undoable. Then I looked at what I could do in my lunch hour and what I could do and night. When I finish one task I make a note of what I will do next and so on.
Yes there are times when it just does not happen the way I planned. No stress-just move on.
I think one of the best things about this business is that you do what you can when you can and keep on going. Always moving forward even if you have to take a detour or two.

Hi Beverly
Thank you for sharing how you operate, you have raised some really valid points especially around not stressing if we do not create the results that we were expecting, or if we have to take the odd detour as long as we remain focused we will get there and that is the main thing.
One of the really good things about working online more than anything else is that we can create our own schedule.

My most successful days are those with a handwritten list. The days without a list are near disasters. Sometimes I need a reminder of what works, thanks!

Hi Kristina,
Thank you for sharing your approach, you can not beat that daily handwritten list. The process does work and we can achieve the outcomes that we are searching for.

Hi Alex

Lists work for me - even if the unfinished tasks get moved forward to the next day - in reality the tasks never end, but we run out of steam.

At least by moving the tasks forward, the 'to do' page has been actioned at close of play. We usually wake up refreshed and ready to tackle it again :0)

Cheers
Rod

Hi, Rod
Thank you for sharing how you tackle that to do list. I really like the concept of moving tasks forward to the next day and agree with you 100%, it is amazing the results if we step back or sleep on something. Coming to it with a refreshed set of eyes works wonders for sure. Much appreciated.

Well, to be honest, I just keep changing the deadlines! Lol...I know that won't get me where I need to be. Lists are effective. It does feel good to cross them off.
Debbie

Hi Debbie thanks for sharing, to be honest, I do the same at times, it can move the pressure a bit as long as we stay focused on the outcomes we do get there.
Nothing beats that feeling when we tick those tasks off the list they are building blocks that are creating our futures.

We need 30 hour days and 9 day weeks.

Hi, Stanely you just made my day, it can certainly feel like that at times. We come to online marketing with the idea of working less. It can be the exact opposite while we are getting some forward momentum.
One of the real pluses of WA is that the knowledge base and resources provide us with the opportunity to work smarter. Thank you for the comment really appreciated it, one of my theme songs lol.

Agree Alex. I just made my list on my post on blue print for success a simple plan to do every day. Not too heavy task, and if I miss one day can make it up the follow days. Like you said, we all have other commitments

Hi, Sk just read your post, so true if we make a plan and work through it we do get results. I guess it is all about being consistent. Thank you for stopping by.

Follow that list. You don't want to break that shovel short of the mother lode at the bottom Alex!

Classic Mike, so true working through tasks in prioritized fashion does the trick although having said that I have broken the odd shovel handle along the way, just keep on digging. thank you for the comment.

This is awesome info for someone new in the business, like myself !!!! Thanks Alex!!

Hi Roberto, you are most welcome, glad that you found some value in the post, planning and creating a strategy for getting the job done works at every stage of the business cycle or at the very least it gives us the focus that is needed.

Thanks again!!!

You are most welcome.

Making a list to stay focused on priorities is so effective for time management and completion, Alex.

I find myself cheating with it sometimes now I have more time :)) but enjoyed your wisdom.

I can remember hearing a talk by Brian Tracey some time ago.
You would have heard of it no doubt where he explained the Triage time management method which was developed by the French army in World War I when the dressing stations behind the lines were swamped with far too many wounded soldiers for the doctors and nurses to treat.

They solved the problem by dividing the wounded into three groups. The first were those who would die, no matter how much treatment they received whereas the wounded were put aside and made comfortable as light wounds would survive anyway whether they received immediate treatment or not.
The third group consisted of those soldiers who would survive only if they were treated immediately. This is where the doctors and nurses focused their attention.
This sort of fits in with your 'builder tasks'. Prioritizing those tasks.
Have a great week, Alex

Hi, Carol, I missed your comment many apologies, so sorry. Having that time freedom can be so empowering, but as you say we can bend the rules a bit.
Thank you so much for sharing that with us, it was an amazing system and I am sure that it saved many lives. it is one that we could adapt for our business development as well.
I can see how it would mesh together have a great week Carol.

I love lists too...real lists on old fashioned paper! I also do the retroactive listing of items I can cross off! I love that.

For some reason I haven't made many lists for my website though.

That is a good way to put it really like that one Jessica "Retroactive Listing' spot on, thank you. It does work, certainly got me through a sticky patch.
It can be something that can help with planning our online adventures.
