First thing I did after having been away for a while, is updating WordPress, themes, and plug-ins to their most recent versions.

The result? My websites will not display

Did you activate the SSL on your site? If not, it is highly recommended to do so.

Here's Marions' training how to activate SSL on your site. Once you did that, try to clear your browser cache and even better reboot your computer and see if that solves the problem.

:)
Joe

Hi Joe,

Thank you very much for stepping in. I followed your instructions and I do have a save connection now. :-)

However, still my websites do not display. I was beginning to regret having updated my theme (Nisarg), since I was using a child theme and figured that perhaps the child theme got lost during the update. I just checked, and the child theme seems to be intact, as it is stated as Active.
Do you have any idea as to why I cannot view my sites?

Cheers,
Audrey

Try these.

1) Change the theme for temporary troubleshooting
If that works, I think there's something wrong with the theme. Is it a premium theme?

2) If that doesn't work, please immediately reach site-support as they are able to see what's taking place on your site.

Let me know if you need further assistance.

:)
Joe

Hi Joe,

Tnx for your response!

I have contacted site support and they told me to switch themes. Outch! I have had to switch themes once before and have put so much effort in my site since. :-(

The theme developer told me to do something with the plug-ins. I guess I will try to find out what she is talking about...

Cheers,
Audrey

Hi Audrey I know somebody who has a website like this, so she will be able to help you. She is not a guy, so please don't start your question with "hi guys", lol. The WA platform is full of helpful women.
She is Loes, on rank 4. She is very nice and always ready to help. So contact her; send her my kind regards on the way. Thanks.

Hi Usiba!

I always thought it funny when I first went to the US and I heard people saying "Hi guys" to any group of people, females included. I kind a like it! :-)

Yeah, I have talked to Loes before. Just asked for her advice. Thanks for reminding me!

Have a great day,
Audrey

All the best my dear Audrey.

Hey Audrey,

The following Google search result: http://bit.ly/2xzCWye offers different ideas on how to do this. I'm sure you will be able to find one that works best for you.

Hope this helps you.

Hi Trish,

Thanks so much for the link! I checked it out and there is definitely a lot of info out there!

So far, I have not yet found a workaround for my situation, which is a bilingual site using a subdomain. Did find turorials regarding the Polylang plugin or others like it or very tech savvy stuff that I am scared to try (since I would not know what I am doing)!

Reading all this stuff did make me decide to not use flags, but a little drop-down menu containing the languages available. Just need to find out how to add it to my menubar...

Have a great day!
Audrey

Hey Audrey,

You can create a customized drop-down menu within your WordPress menu:

Thanks a lot, Trish! I do have dropdowns for my pages.

I am now looking to create a dropdown for my two languages in my menubar.

Ciao,
Audrey

You can use the Custom Links in you menu options Audrey.

See screen prints...

Wow, Trish! Thank you!

I will study this. As you probably have noticed, I am really struggling with the tech part. :-o

However, I am getting help from an IT friend this weekend. If I cannot figure this out, I will work it out with him. :-)

Will send you a screenshot when it is up and running!

Cheers,
Audrey

Great news, Thank YOU for letting me know!

Now you can create training and share that here to share with others ... and gain credits for the training. :-))

Yes, Trish! I intend to make a training out of this. It will be my first! Will have to find out how to operate the video software!

Tnx for your encouragement! :-)

It's a theme thing. Go to wordpress.org and click on Themes. Find your theme and you'll see its support forum.

Thank you much, Marion. I will check out the support forum and if that does not help, I will contact the theme developer.

Hi guys,

I started my website in English. In order to generate more traffic, I now want to translate it into Dutch (my native language). I am a professional translator an

Yes, it sounds like a great idea and I totally agree as I speak more than 1 language too. Google Translate is awful and I have yet to see one any count. There is no way to keep up with the combination of phrases when the way a language is structured even varies within itself...too complex

Thanks for your input, Chris.

I have no worries about the linguistic part. My concern is the technical aspect.

Cheers,
Audrey

I can help with the technical aspects. However, I have a much simpler way. All I would do is copy the orginal WordPress Install with Database, Plugins and Files then create and connect a subdomain doppelgänger in Dutch.

I.e. MyDomain.com - Dutch.MyDomain.com

Yes, Chris! This sounds exactly like what I have in mind. Now, I am trying to figure out how to go about it.

So, you are saying: copy the entire WP Install, create a subdomain containing this copy, create a connection to the copy, translate the copy. Correct?

Result:
surinametraveltips.com
nl.surinametraveltips.com

Right?

Perhaps the original one could even become us.surinametraveltips.com ?

If my understanding is correct so far, the next question is: where is the Copy command? :-)

You need to install a plugin called WP Clone ( Marion Black has Excellent training on this) in the orginal (Mother) domain and then create a sub (Child) domain and then install the back up onto the sub and simply translate all text.

Got it, buddy?

Got it, bud! lol

I am going after Marion Black and WP Clone!

It scares me to do these things. Should I make a back-up first??

Clone....Backup Synonymous

You owe me a virtual hug and cup of coffee

Hug to you and Teddy, attached.

Come and get your coffee in Paramaribo!

:-) :-) :-)

Chris, are you still there?

Or, anybody...?

I have created a subdomain and installed WP Clone on both my the mother and child sites.

I used WP Clone to backup the mother (saved the clone on my laptop), then went to the child and tried to restore the backup.

And there you have it: an error, see attachment.

Why can't it connect to the host? Which host are we talking about here?

In WP Clone, I should check Restore from URL, then what should I insert in the input field? The name of the zip file (the clone)?

Can you help??

Where is your site hosted, my friend?
Is it hosted at WA?
Their URL is https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/websites/support

Thanks, Chris.

I forwarded the problem to Support.

Cheers,
Audrey

Good show, buddy. Thank you for the virtual hug. I hope to take you up on the Coffee someday when we are both rich. I was JSOC and have been in tons of countries but never Suriname. One day Sunshine, and I can come visit the beautiful places there and you and your hubby can buy us that coffee.

OK Chris, you're on! :-)

Guess what: I just got a response from Support. They have restored the clone to my subdomain! I have asked Support for help before and again, I can say: these guys rock! They are fast and they offer solutions!

I am starting translation of my website right now!

Thanks for your support, Chris!

Audrey

I am very happy you are happy

I'd create two subdomains, en.fotolia.com for the English, and aimed at google.com/ncr and nl.fotolia.com for the Dutch aimed at google.nl/ncr

You can then use a geo location plugin to direct visitors to the relevant site based on their location https://wordpress.org/plugins/ip2location-redirection/ as well as flags to allow them to swap between them manually.

I see what you mean Rich, thank you.

I would like my visitors to be able to choose, though. So, if -for whatever reason- they land on the English site, they could click the the Dutch flag to go to the Dutch site, and vv.
The way fotolia is set up, visitors do not even notice that there is a different language version. I would like the bilingual aspect to be visible from the start.

So, my question remains: do I cover the entire bilingual issue if I choose to create a subdomain? Or, are there hidden factors I am going to have to deal with??

Thanks,
Audrey

You're covering the bilingual issue because they are actually separate sites in the same way that all subdomains on siterubix are but in two different languages. It does mean you have to manage two separate sites rather than one.

OK, Rich. All clear.

I think it will work out with two sites: I could keep writing in English, then translate into Dutch (or vv, does not matter), and then publish one language after the other on each site. I think I can do this!

Thank you!
Audrey

I did the same for one of my sites. It takes double time to make it, but at the end, you have a better product than in the situation with google translate.

Google Translate is not even a remote option in my mind, Anita. :-)
