Help To Grow Graduation Ceremony
Hi Everyone,
I hope you have had a successful week so far.
I had the pleasure of attending a graduation ceremony for a course called Help To Grow organised by Portsmouth University Business School and backed by the UK Government.
It has been a very compressed mini MBA course that started in June, only 4 months ago.
The structure of the course was excellent and guided students through all the aspects of business management, and encouraged them to write their own Growth Plan for their own business, using lessons they learned during the course and from mentoring.
This course was designed for Small To Medium sized enterprises, so not necessarily startups but companies that have been in existence for more than a year, to helo them on their journey towards success.
The course material featured various UK small business success stories and how they created their own success, their techniques for success, and setbacks they had along the way
The businesses were from all sorts of industries including a small brewery, an ice cream manaufacturer, a company that makes wood stoves for barbecues, designed to make the perfect pizza, a software company and many other examples.
The idea is that students, who are all entrepreneurs and working on their businesses day by day, are guided and can learn from the theoretical material and also from the case studies and put into practice what is relevant for their own businesses.
Additionally each course student is allocated a mentor of their choice to give them up to 10 sessions of mentorship and guidance relevant to their business.
It has been a really good course and I have made some good friends who have also participated.
Additionally, graduates get the benefit of a nationwide Alumni society across all university business schools, who are also linked to industry experts. One of the speakers at the graduation was a leading business entrepreneur who gave a presentation about leadership in business, which was really interesting. He featured one of his own heroes the explorer Shackleton who took an expedition to the South pole, which failed, but he managed to bring back all his 22 crewmen even though many disasters befell them, and it took them more than 2 years to get back. This was in the early part of last century so before the days of satellite navigation, and radio communications. What struck me was the bravery of men who went on such arduous expeditions with quite primitive equipment by modern standards, and remained determined to survive and they all did return live - a happy ending even though lots of things went wrong.
It was interesting that the speak Neville Merrit, who is himself a successful businessman and a Director of Pure Potential Development, chose to speak about leadership in a traditional sense rather than relating leadership to successful billionaires, such as Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, and Richard Branson, Sir Alan Sugar or any number of other successful businessmen.
I wish you a successful outcome to your week and also to your business journey!
Have a great weekend ahead!
Cheers
Alan
