Food for thought.
As I am sitting here waiting for my class to start. ( I teach ESL online) I thought I would get in a little training in from Wealthy Affiliate. As I was reading I was reminded of the three main principles of marketing I have learned from another online platform (AWAI)
The three main principles are :
1) People don't like to be sold
I can attest to this fact wholeheartedly! Before finding WA I explored numerous "classes" all of which made me feel dirty and like they were only after one thing : My money, which being a teacher I don't have a lot of. The would offer "free" classes that really were only summaries and not really teaching you HOW to do anything just concepts. Then they would make their pitch on how their program had all the answers and why you should shell out 3000+ dollars to learn their system. Wait ! What? was always my reaction.
Then I found WA while researching another system trying to figure out if it was legit or a scam. I flew through the free classes or modules, whatever you want to call them: after each one I learned something and I implemented whatever steps they said to do. I felt like the cloud had parted and the light was so bright I had to wear shades. ( Yes, I have a corny sense of humor)
I had to take a break because I didn't even have the 19 dollars to join at the time. Sad I know but there it is. A month later I joined YIPPEE! Which leads me to the second principal
2) People buy EVERYTHING with emotion.
Sticking with myself as the example and my discovery of Wealthy Affiliate, I can tell you it's true. All those other "programs" and I use that term loosely made me FEEL icky and like I had just been scammed.
My experience with Wealthy Affiliate was and is completely the opposite. I feel like I matter and valued and am part of a community not just another $$$sign.
Knowing your audience means knowing what matters to them. Research is the key here. Know your demographics is a part but the more information you have the better you will know your target audience. A lot of people skip the research part and just sell something and that doesn't work (see #!1) What values they feel at important. When you know this than you know how to reach them and your life is a lot easier. If you are providing a product or service that fulfills a need that is important to your audience your work is halfway done. On to the last principal
3) The customer uses logic to justify the purchase
Not only do you need to research your audience but also your product or service so that you know what the benefits are to appeal to his/her logical side.
Going back to using me as an example. Because I can show and demonstrate what I have learned in the free courses. I can justify the price for premium because I "know" that it is not a gimmicky get rick scheme. I also have all of these features that I can use to justify the coast to my husband. I can justify the price to myself because I have seen what else is out there and after going through the free courses I have something to show for it/ For me that was proof enough.
As a recap the tree things to keep in mind when wanting to promote a product or service to a specific audience is
1. Know who your audience is
2. We buy based on emotion
3. We justify the purchase through logic.
So I hope I have given you truly some "food for thought" as well as tools to help you along your way through the online entrepreneurial world.

I get emails from AWAI all the time. Did you try them out?
I also am certified thru TEFL and have spent the last few summers in the Carpathian mountains in western Ukraine teaching English at a summer camp. I am literally on Day 2 of the Teaching English Online course. I am building out my online teaching site at the same time. Do you have an online teaching website?
Mark
It is a small world. I just started teaching with education First as they have started a kids course that focuses on 5-10 year olds. I haven't thought about creating a website (ESL) I wouldn't know where to start. Any suggestions would be welcome. This was my 1st day teaching with them. I started out in 2004 teaching ESL then went to Reg Ed and have been missing ESL ever since. So here I am
As far as AWAI goes I am a COS member and I attended the virtual Bootcamp in March.
There is another gentleman here at WA who teaches with TEFL. I will see if I can find him and ask him if he has a website for teaching. TEFL offers a course on teaching online and building a website to do so. It is like $110 with a discount. I am going to look at some themes or maybe just ask the community for a good theme for teaching english.

Let me know What he says I would love to expand that area.
I believe he is in Costa Rica and his profile pic shows him playing drums. I sent TEFL an email asking them what theme they use when they show how to set up the site you get when you take the class. Talk soon.
